Help needed adjusting rear softail shocks

OK, I have read the manual.... sounds really easy but these shocks have got me totally  fuucked....   Manual says   1. loosen jam nut.   2. use special adjusting spanner to rotate plate in or out to  inc or dec preload....  3. tighten jam nut...

but its just not that simple when you go to do it.

    Problem:

    1. when I use the special spanner to rotate the plate, the entire outside canister of the shock body rotates with it, and I'm sure this is not supposed to happen.
    2. the manual says nothing about what to do with the front end flange nut, but this also spins when I rotate the plate.
    3. Should I loosen off or tighten up the end  flange nut before adjusting the shock to stop the shock canister from spinning?
    4. Now I have one shock adjusted differently than the other and can't get them back to equal
    5. these shocks are shit, but before I toss them in the bin I at least want to say that I had them adjusted right...

If anyone actually understands what the hell I'm talking about.... a little help would be greatly appreciated.

Ha ha, I know what you mean. ok the canister should rotate as you adjust the load. The end lock nut should not turn at all. The lock nut should be loose. That is the nut that tightens against the shock plate. The way I adjusted was to spray the hell out of the inside of the shock with WD40 or something similar. Loosen off both lock nuts and spin them all the way to the front of the bike. Turn both shock body's out or in equal number of times. I ended up turning them both as far as they would go and take it that both shocks were at equal pressure then mark the body with a dab of paint and then adjust them equally. It is a pain in the arse, especially when they have seized up as mine had. Getting the right pre load is where the time is spent. ride adjust ride adjust. I found a place where they list the weights and pre load settings for a specific weight, I will find and post.
