     Hi Guys,

I'm trying to decide in spending lots of $$$ on my Deluxe to get it to STOP and CORNER as I must admit I like look of the Deluxe (06 Blue & white)

But its been suggested that the 2010 King range would be the way to go, 103in nd all

SO, what are peoples thoughts about this, is it really that big a difference between the two models?

Yes, I will be touring alot, that's my thing

Yes, two up in comfort would make the wife happy

Yes, I love twisties (still a sports rider at heart)

Yes, I'm getting old but not that bloody old (wife calls them the pensioner bikes)

Whats really important to me is the brakes and overall handling of the bike, good pick up for over taking etc

Pros & cons about your ownership would be great

    Cheers

Poddy, I had a Deluxe too and upgraded to a RK (09)
It's like Davo said....chalk and cheese. The main things I noticed:
It stops, more clearance, more power.

Well, in speaking with a lot of pple it seems moving to the RK is a better option $$$ wise than 'Project Stop-Go_Stop Deluxe'
A Stealer in Qld will give me 23K for the Deluxe as a trade so once I decide which RK to get I may just have to ride her back from Qld (again) LOL

    Cheers

If ya gunna get a RK second hand make sure it's 09 or later, they will have all the new feature, but of course the 11's have a 103 I believe. I upgraded my 09 FLHT to 103 couldn't be happier.

Not much point adding to Davos comments as he has owned both.

Haven't seen your deluxe and not trying to upset your wife but is the deluxe more or less pensioner than my king? They are whatever you make them.

    cheers

On the road the RK is a given but how does the RK compare to the softy around town?

Take the screen off and most non harley people couldnt tell you which was which and why without reading the fender script.

I mean handling and usability. Most of my riding is just hooning around the Nortehrn Beaches and local national parks so lots of twisties and not much road use, though I like the idea of a lot of the RK features. The RK looks a bit cumbersome for that. True or false?

Its a lot of bike in heavy traffic and 50 odd kg heavier than a softail.

It handles very well but really shines on the open road.  The brakes are great when you need them regardless of where you are.

If I never left the metro area I probably would of stayed with my Softail Standard but...I do leave the metro are ;)

OK I guess the RK has to be up for consideration for the next bike but, having had three in a bit over 12 months I might have to take a break for a bit :) A very rapid journey from a 250 to an 883 to a 103 Softail...hold me back everyone! (Actually the bank will do that for you).

Hey Surly.... how do you like your SE wind deflector wind shield???  How does it compare to the full size RK screen?

Cheers and happy new year to you,

    Hi Guys,
still deciding on what to get but renovating the Deluxe is now not an option. (Saves Me Money Me Thinks)
Looking at maybe a SG or a Classic but it will be a 2011 as I want the 103 engine

    Cheers

    Poddy,

Smart move.  Start with the Touring base frame and suspension and build on that...  Life is a learning curve and you are on track...

As to 96 and 103, I have had both and there is about a half a gear to a gear difference.  The 96 on the same hills HAD to downshift where the 103 motored on up effortlessly.  For my money, the 103 has been the happiest and smoothest of all the Twin Cams.

Mind you I have the 110 now, and it is a MONSTER.  It is not smooth like the 103, yes a solid gear better yet, but is hot and vibrates and has all kinds of engine noise and while it is a HOT ROD in my CVO Street Glide the 103 was a smooth mover.....  My 96 was noisy, and vibrated more, but I have seen several of the 103s that seemed like a happier engine.  The 110 has loads of engine noise and vibration like the 96.

If you are the kind of mechanic in tune so much that can feel a difference in the sound and feel of a diesel after an oil change..??.  That feeling makes you more in tune with your engine, and you will note the difference in the 103 over the 96.  I cannot tell you why, but the 103 is just happier.  I have yet to try a 120R, but that is coming next year.  I will put a Topic on here when a local Ultra comes in for service with the 120 on board.  I just don't know which bike to put it in, with my o&b Street Glide now or the new BIG BLUE coming in July... heh he... Won't know til probably Christmas which way to go, either one or both.

Anyway, my experienced two cents worth, if you are starting from scratch with a newer bike, concentrate on the 103...
