Both filters have the Rare Earth Magnet, to pick up the metal. The KP has machined cooling fins in the casing, but no bolt to remove the filter from the engine. The Pro filter looks like the K&N filter. They are much of a muchness as far as differences go. It just depends what money you want to spend. As I said in an earlier post I would have bought the Pro Filter if i had known about it at the time. I have changed the oil on mine once since I changed over and not much came out as far as crap in the filter medium. The magnet had a fine paste on it ( metal). So it does work.

They are easy to clean as everything is SS, apart from the casing. Wash in solvent, blow dry and reassemble. One thing with the casing, Billet Aluminum, be careful what you use on it as some metal polishes can stain the facing. I found out the hard way and spent more time cleaning the casing to get it back to shiny.

I believe it does.. and is probably as good... maybe better ? Wouldn't mind getting one of those as well.. My bike is what helps keep me sane, not only riding but maintenance .. with regard to cleaning these filters, I also invested in an ultrasonic cleaner.. I've made a post on this in another part of the forum and have done a little research.. as regard to making your own.. Yep, it is doable, but I have chosen to go to a DIY kit, and just this afternoon, went to Jaycar Electronics ... and bought a kit, Hope I can put it together ..

Not only will it be useful for cleaning the filter.. there will be so many other things it can clean .. such as Injectors, tatoo needles, jewlery, carbs, nuts/bolts/washers, ceramics.. you name it..

interesting stuff, ask for there best price at Jaycar..

The question of cleaning I feel I have covered.. but I believe soap and water, carby cleaner would do the job .. I just took it to the next step. And if some mates want there stuff Ultrasonicly cleaned then, there going to have to bring over a 6 pack I guess.. lol

... it all comes out in the wash..

    High Power Ultrasonic Cleaner Kit

Ref Silicon Chip Magazine September 2010

Most people would know that you can get small ultrasonic cleaners for jewellery and similar small items, so why not a much larger version? It would be ideal for cleaning automotive and other mechanical parts, fabrics which can't be machine washed, ornate bric-a-brac and a host of other hard-to-clean items. You can use a variety of receptacles for a tank, such as an old cistern or laundry tub. It can also be used with solvents such as kerosene or just water and detergent. The kit includes the transducer, case, cable and electronics and can be powered from a 2.5A 12VDC plugpack. Everything is included in the kit except for a housing for the transducer and sealant. For sealant you can use any neutral cure silicone suitable for wet areas. You'll also need epoxy resin such as Araldite or JB Weld, and for a housing, a short piece of 65mm PVC plumbing pipe and a drain, waste and vent end cap available from any plumbing supplier will do the job.

    Specifications:
    • Power requirements:12V, 2.5A
    • Transducer voltage: 250VAC square wave
    • Frequency range: Main mode 19kHz to 42kHz
    • Timeout adjustment: 30s to 10m

Ozroder you have nailed it, I too have a background in large rotating machinery (Steam Turbines, Gas Turbines) were lub oil analysis is a mandatory maintenance task. Hence this experience and knowledge compelled me to have an analysis done on my 09 FXST when I changed oils over to Mobil synthetic, not only does this process allow you information on contaminates and oxidation but an experienced OA Tech will also be able to advise on oil change cycle. I had my first analysis done at 9K and was advised that from the data extracted, I could let my changes go to 12K (keeping in mind that this OA included some mineral oil contamination due to first change over), I change at 10K and have used Mobil V-Twin synthetic for some 32K now, would have preferred to go Amsol but at the time was difficult to get here in WA.
By the way I have also installed the re usable type oil filter some 20K ago and have had no problems, I like the what I can see and the magnets allow for visual inspections, I also know that with the combination of syn oil and mechanical filter my bike runs a lot cooler, I have not checked via a measuring devise for exact temps but it feels cooler, I would hazard a guess that running cooler could also have something to do with a good tune too.
