I checked the oil and I was just measuring on the dipstick. very low... I did a little bit of looking on the net and come down to a crank case breather, pressure, blowby issue and thought it had something to do with the new cleaner, so I took her back in to get it checked out. They had the bike for 2 days and told me that my valve seals were shot and leaking oil into the pistons, so they replaced them and honed the pistons out. I have been running her around Brisbane and up and down the Pacific a few times and I have done 500 km's since I had it fixed. I ride her and use the throttle but I don't thrash it, my bike has just clocked 5000km   I just want to find out what the norm is with the sporty engine and how I can prevent heavy blow by into the air cleaner. I'm sure the crank case emissions back into the air cleaner will not help the combustion   Cheers   Paul   " /> I checked the oil and I was just measuring on the dipstick. very low... Oil consumption, Blowby, Heavy Breather... oil build up

    Hey Guy's and Gal's

Just wanted to ask what your Sporty's oil consumption is and do you have much blowby from your crank case into your heavy breather?

I just got a RSD air cleaner and SEPST installed about 500Km ago and I have noticed some build up of oil in the cleaner and it has dropped about 2mm on the dip stick from full over 500km.

My first problem was after the first 3000km after my first service I never checked my oil, then I took her in for the SEPST and air cleaner to be fitted about 4300km.

Got her back and I was very pleased with the way she was running now, on my second trip out I noticed a little bit of blue smoke then a lot of blue smoke <img src=" border="0" src="/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/_default/emoticons/sad.gif" />

I checked the oil and I was just measuring on the dipstick. very low...

I have a new second hand Fat Boy (2005) which from Day One in July has had a small oil drip from the seam on the Heavy Breather. I finally  got around to calling the dealer about it this week and they said it is a minor problem connected with couple of vents under the breather and for the small amount of oil involved it could wait until the next service and wouldn't do any harm. A different problem but the consequences of yours are pretty alarming. I might get it into that service a bit quicker than intended. Hope yours is now ok.

     I don't know...

I haven't had much of a chance to ride with the rain but this weekend was the first time I could put some miles on her.

On Sat she felt great ;) pulling hard... sucking in lots of air

But today she felt a little more sluggish and loud up the top... just like a bird with a hangover

I dont know if I'm been paranoid with previous issues and don't trust the service people...

This is my first Harley and I want it to run spot on

    Hi Paul
I have a 2010 1200 Sportster and it has been fine so far, mind you I haven't checked the air filter. No blue smoke to my knowledge. Clocked 4500km today on a run down to Jacobs Well and all appears fine. Mine is stock apart from SE slip ons. I plan to change to Hooker Trouble Makers + Power Commander next year once it has some more KM's and well and truly run in. From what I can gather the motors are pretty agricultural and some oil use and blow by would be classed as normal by HD. Do you have before and after dyno figures when the SEPST was fitted?

    Hey sssmour,

I haven't had a dyno yet, just a map to suit the pipes and cleaner.

I wasn't bothered about a dyno but now I'm thinking about it to see how it runs

G,day Paul, I have a 2008, 1200C and have never needed to top up my oil bewteen services, as the amount of oil consumption is minor, but whenever I feel the old girl sounding a bit sluggish I just give the air cleaner a good wash and dry and away she goes again, and I mean you can really notice the difference.

    Hi Paul

It would be worth your while to have a dyno tune and a custom map setup. This is the reply I received from Power Commander:

Sam , the best tuner would be steve at power house dyno ph 5502 1822. No you will not void your warranty if you fit a pc.

I spoke to Steve and he was very helpful. Their workshop is down at Nerang so no big deal to get there.

    thanks sssmour

I want to find out why I have a lot of blow by or it might be normal for the way I ride... I dunno

Then get a dyno but I have to find a place I can dyno with the SEPST set up in SE QLD

    Hi Paul,
Maybe go for a ride with you one day and compare the blow by with mine. I live @ Redland Bay. Are you using the HD oil? What did the dealer service people say about the blow by?

    Hey sssmour,

    Great idea...
I didn’t realise how noisy up top these engines are.
    I'm in Kangaroo Point

Yeah I'm using the HD 20w50

I haven’t spoke to the dealer, I'm just doing some research so he cant stump my or I can ask the right questions

I have been told that we can put heavy weight oil especially with the humidity we get in QLD and it will quieten and cool the engine down more

    Hi Paul
Yeah they get pretty noisy when they are hot. They are very agricultural engines hence the recommeded high detergent/diesel type oil.
Do you use Morgan & Wacker at Newstead. I have found Julian to be ok.
