Mine arms automatically after a minute or so of the bike being switched off.

Press and hold to arm it. Press twice to disarm. Thats how mine works on my 06 model

 My 05 sets automatically after 30 seconds. A real pain in the bum. Love the proximity alarm on the new models like my 2010 Iron.
