    G'day all,

Thought I'd join this forum to gain some research as to what Harley would best suit me.

A little about myself - I currently own 3 bikes - none of which are cruisers as yet:

    - 05 Yamaha YZF-R6
    - 06 Kwakka GPX 250
    - 09 Kwakka KLX250s

Now that I have my sports bike,  and dirt/road trail bike, my next pursuit is to get the cruiser - and what cruiser is the best - H-D of course! ;)

It will be some time before I do get one - heading to the Isle of Man TT next year, and once that trip is done - I will start scraping my savings together for one of these bad boys!  Currently looking at something like this:

    http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_AU/Motorcycles/super-glide-custom.html

but not sure yet - it's a big motor and I'm not sure how I would handle it??  I was considering the Iron - but that's just a wee bit too small I'm thinking at this stage - I'm picturing a cruiser that can handle the long haul - so am thinking 1200cc or above?

Anyways - what I would really like to know is what to look out for if I look at a private sale bike, or any recommendations as a first Harley.  Also, maintenance-wise, what I would need to do to keep her in good working order!

    Cheers crew!

    JD ;)

    Welcome!

    I went from a CT110 to a 2005 Softail 1450cc.
A bike is only as fast as how much throttle you give it.
I have ridden R1's, TL1000R's and owned a few trail bikes.
The biggest challenge i found with the Harley is the weight when turning very slowly at tight corners or when at the lights with my GF on the back and she decides to wiggle around.
Apart from that learning curve it has all been pleasure.
I have done 4000km in 6 months and decided i would change the oil & filter every 4000km as well as sticking to the standard 8000km services.

As for which harley, go to a Harley dealer and test ride all the demo bikes. Thats what i did. I didnt like the rubber mounted engine on the Dyna but i did like the way it handled over the Rocker (180 rear vs 240 rear). Just make sure you take long pants/shirt & a legal helmet.

Then i rode my mates 2005 Night Train and ended up buying it a month later.

    Good luck champ

    Welcome to the forum.

Dyna's are the best all round  bike. Good around town and good on a long cruise. I may be a little biased though

Welcome JD, I would also recommend the Dyna range as your first Harley. I have owned a Softail, Road King and now a Dyna. The Road King was perfect for 2 up touring, but I do enjoy the Dyna as it's a lighter bike and easy to throw around. Not into the long distance 2 up stuff at the moment. Also, change your oil and filter at the 4000 mark and get the services done at 8000km. If you can, do a Harley Ride Day and take a couple of your ideal bikes for a ride. Worth the effort. Another tip, don't go riding with mates until you are really confident about your new bike. Can be a disaster .....enjoy.
