Gear oils have high-pressure additives....that stinky stuff....generally sulfur-bearing compounds. Most gearboxes which don't share engine oil don't have highly finished honed or lapped gear faces and do better with oils with these additives. Harley Big Twins should use gear oil and preferably a synthetic oil, which is much less hygroscopic.

Okay, all my other bikes one oil does the lot.
But on the Harley, there are three sets of oil, maybe I was mistaken in thinking trans oil for the gear box, so what oil goes into the final drive? And which oil does the clutch?
    Thanks in advance

Hey Big G, how you going m8?

i know your bike & you don't need to ever change the gearbox oil m8, it's got Redline Heavy Shockproof last for ages unless it gets water in it.

The heavy shockproof redline oil i have in my gearbox has been there longer than whats in your gearbox. just leave it m8

I recently changed over to the Redline heavy dutyhock proof in the gearbox - best shit ever!!! Well worth the money. Heaps smoother now.
I change my primary oil everytime i change my engine oil (every 4000klms). But i just put in redline ATF fluid in my primary now too. So i might change the primary on every second oil change now. For your info i run the mobil 1 v twin in the engine now too.

Was thinking of putting the Redline Shockproof in next g/b oil change but it's not easy to come by. Auto1 are supposed to stock it but the closest to me (Shellharbour NSW) doens't stock it, can get it on ebay for $24.95 L , but postage was  $19.95 !  Anyone have any idea where on the south coast I might be able to purchase it?

    Cheers

Primary - Redline High Temp ATF
    G/Box - Redline Heavy Shockproof

Been in both the mechanical and oil industries and these are some of the best oils I have ever come across.

Thanks for the tips fellas, I'll see what Performanceclub can do for me, that nick guys prices on ebay are good but the freight was hexy, although come to think of it it's probably exspensive due to be DG (maybe).

Hey Dodgy, don't take this to heart but your dog would never win a beauty contest !

i run Penrite pro gear 85w/110 in the trans on my flstf.
Noticeably better shifting compared to the formula+, just seems to drop into gear better, both up & down
