Riding with Injury.. Gear Changes

I broke my left leg in Jan in 6 places and since then I can not move my ankle and also have sever nerve damage. The reason I bring this up is now that I have limited movement, nerve damage and a foot that doesn’t face forward i find it very difficult to change gears on my Dyns. I have forward controls at the moment and I am a pretty big guy 6 foot 5 and 130kg so it’s not reaching the gears that is the problem just controlling the whole mechanics of it. Looking for an easier way to do this without a suicide shifter??!!

have thought about this before, thought about using electronic solinoids for up and down shift controlled by switch on bars, just havent gone any further with it,just a thought,

Have you thought about swapping the gear lever and the rear brake pedal like the old pommy bikes with the right hand gear shift, i had a 69 bonnie and it never bothered me.Thats if your injury can cope with the brake pedal.

thanks for all the ideas... i can press down but my left foot isnt straight anymore so very hard to change gears up. at the moment im changing up with the heel of my foot reaching around the leaver and pulling back not the best but only way to keep on the road..

believe that Bones has a similar problem with right foot.... after the break she is unable to reach the brake pedal because the foot did not mend straight so you may still have a problem.

She could remount the pedal and operate it with her heel, i can`t imagine it being a big job, just a thought.

if the gear lever was sitting behind your forward controls and you had a bit of flat steel screwed into your heel you could probably heel shift up and down easier ? - sounds silly but ......

.... and you could add spurs to complete the look ( just got that in before someone else did )

hey Guido, speak to this bloke, I believe he is actually an above knee amputee on the left side so he may have some mods done.

Cheers Crusty, just got a hold of him hes got none left and he's going out of business. That in itself is fucked but it's due to brain a aneurysm and 2 strokes! It would have been perfect though. Might just have to get one made up myself.
