Throw over saddle bags.

I started another thread asking about a tent or swag for when you go away for a few days on your bike and have to camp out in the great outdoors I myself have just bought one of those biker swags and it rolls down pretty small but still yet to use it.

Ok what I am trying to do is cut down on the amount of crap I have to strap on my bike the bedding is sorted with the new swag but for a few other things I may need a set of saddle bags and throw overs may be the way to go I don't want to spend big dollars on a set of leather bags and supports and to be truthful I am not over fussed on the way they look I have seen a few Sportsters fitted with them and it does not look right.

So the questions I need to ask with a set of throw overs should I get away without using any sort of supports with them, how do they hold up in wet weather riding, if I just throw them over the pillion seat and strap the swag on top of them would that be enough to hold them in place when riding.

If any members here can give me any feedback that would be great cheers.

I use throw overs on my sporty with a swag strapped on just like that, They rubbed a little on the shocks but theyre cheap so doesnt bother me too much. You can get detatchable saddlebag brackets that will keep em off the shocks. Got them from here www.leatherup.com

Iam still using my old Gearsack throwovers (from the 80's) the zippers are busted now...but with the flap folded over theryre still reasonably water resistant, the recent 'Severe weather conditions' in Brissy saw the roads flooding, and my old dri rider becoming a not so dri rider, although some of the stuff in the bag was damp/near the flap the rest of it was dry....(i seem to remember they had a life time warranty on the zip) ...not bad for a 25yr old set of throw overs.

Although small in capacity (i still managed a change of clothes for my son and i + toiletries + a billy full of cooking gear+ a pair of joggers + tools -for a week) these bags come with rubber straps n hooks that help position them /i took mine off long ago..and they still sit fine, especially if youve got something strapped or seated on top....i used em on my sporty with solo seat no drama...but i did tie the bottoms (using the loops provided) to the shocks to stop them rolling into the tyre...(never had to do that on a bike with a wider seat)....no supports used.....

Dont know if they still make em, but they were one of the best investments ive ever made...
