     Hi all im new here

Have been thinking of a bobber project

But not sure on the Costs of a ICV and what an engineer expects

I know I have to do all the ADRs

    Option 1

Looking on the net I can buy a decent custom built bobber from the states with a brand name frame and a Ultima or revtec engine for $7000 to $10,000

This is my preferred but how hard is it to get a existing bike passed by engineer?

    Option 2

Buy a roller from the us

Fit local engine budget prob  sportster :( or triumph

    Option 3

    Mod a local bike

But this starts with a hefty outlay

Any advice from people that have gone through this would be great

    Option 1
    - problem with this is it may be considered a new motorcycle, it then needs to comply with all current ADR's, very few will comply to the lighting, seating, handle bar and sheet metal requirements. so modifications will need to take place, plus an engineers certificate.

Enginners will look as the NCOP (national code of practice) 01, for construction of an ICV. This will involve you proving (through reciepts) that you obtained all parts legally (this takes place during the RTA inspection), they will require a brake test, and a noise test i think the decible level is 89dcbl.....you ride past a stationary noise meter set at a particular distance while you maintain a certain speed....60kmh...the idea is to get in a high gear so when you pass the meter you are burbelling not roaring past....you'll also need an MSO wheather its a roller, or complete import, this will assist the allocation of the VIN. Option 2 is covered by the above.

    Option 3

Mod a local bike = is your best bet, engineering mods to a frame, is significantly cheaper, and negates all the lighting BS, because it will not be an ICV but a mod'ed motorcycle manufactured in what ever yr it was. If you build using a non MSO'd or VIN'ed frame, all the above comes into play....

the hefty outlay- will be offset by the knowledge your hard earned will remain local and give someone a job......and costs should be relative to what you'd have spent anyway.

That being said perhapsd Angustriple could chime in and give you (and me) a pm to discuss possible alternative routes for HD engined chops....

Good luck- its a shame the local legislation doesnt encourage this kind of activity, just imagine the industry and manufacturing jobs that would be created....not to mention the focus of productive motorcycling instead of less kosher activities....but i guess it takes a genius to work all this out......and we dont have one in govt

     Thanks Cromag

I own the ideal bike to modify but its too good to chop

It all started by thinking id buy a basket case iron head or shovel then thought a WLA frame to save all the crap

then stated looking at rollers from the US then looking at completed bikes - a 2yo flyright built bobber with 100ci Ultima just sold on ebay for $7000us

I agree in keeping local where it works but other than the red tape and engineering the US options looking to sweet

For the same outlay if not less I can build or buy a 110+CI bike with a nice frame springer front end not to mention brakes that work and one of those electric start buttons ive missed out on for so many years

Stopping Lights and Noise all goes without saying

Its the Frame testing rake and stretch im not sure with also If I buy a complete bike and present it as a ICV with very few receipts what do they say?

I have heard stories in other states about engineers charging 5000+ if this is the case its all over for me

If its 1000 to 2000 and I have to make a few mods to a imported bike it still sums up

On another note - is using the vin and neck with a new frame rebirthing?

    MORE ADVICE AND OPINIONS

Has anyone imported and regod a custom?

     Hi Cheers all

    Walka your a top guy

cheers for your time on the phone and helping me feel a little better about proceeding with a BUILD

Wilso - I have had a email from Choppawizza as it all started with me looking at a US build of a flyrite iron head bobber and a email to them got me back to choppawizza

But im in Vic so Walka helped me out

Just on a second note I dont think Id proceed with without a helpfull and kind on the wallet engineer which I will be sorting out prior to going further

As I called 3 Vic bike engineers one only does personal imports the other is MIA and the third was negative from the start talking huge dollars and will NOT pass a rigid frame

I now have a contact for a decent guy who im yet to speak with
