Obscured number plate. Problem?

The original owner of my 05 Fat Boy had personalise plates so I took them to the RTA last week and exchanged them for standard silver on black. The new plate though is about 10cm wider than the original so I had to trim it to fit them in the chrome plate frame. This means the frame is now cutting a bit into the first letter and the last number. No mistaking what the rego number is so a red light or speed camera would pick it up ok, but am I going to get done anyway? I also don't want the plate to cause a chat that would lead to comments about noisy pipes.

It is illegal to cut your plates. In fact, the plates remain the property of the rta and you cannot alter them in any way. So... Are your pipes noisy?

Apparently no one else on the forum has noisy pipes so I'm feeling a bit embarrassed being the odd one out...

Anyway this is a discussion on obscured plates. No one is making me feel too good about this.
