Wild Hogs annual roadtrip is in effect. Booked the boat melbourne to devonport today. We're looking at usual Boxing day departure for something like 13th Jan return.
(you may recall did gippsland and G.O.R last year etc) this year the WolfPack is hoping to do south coast VIC, spirit of tas, tasmania, NYE Hobart, tasmania, then VIC & Great Alpine Way on way back.
Any comments tips welcomed, preferrably useful ones. I'm thinking with twistie roads and tassie weather to bank on only 250-300klms per day. (?)
Would love any tips on accomodation, am thinking Hobart is the happenning place for NYE? hearing Salamanca Place is good etc. Also we will be doing a spot of o'night camping along the way. Cheers!
Last year
This year!....
AND we have some changes to the WolfPack line-up too...
Wolf 1 has a new ride....
Wolf 2 has new paint job....
Wolf 3 has a brand new street bob with a 103" kit and one of those shiny new SuperChargers hanging off the side!
Might join you for the first leg.
Coast or Hume?
How do you circumsize a Tasmanian? Kick his sister in the Jaw
Sounds like a great trip, wish I could join ya's, but have to go to Thailand with the Missus and kid! Ah well!
Spent 2 years in Tassie, everything they say, (and I mean everything!) about Tassie is true! Best ridin roads in Oz, no question.
Lookin at your planned route, your gonna take in a lot of dirt roads, I'm thinkin that's maybe just Google maps suggested route!
Check out another thread goin at the moment-http://www.hdforums.com.au/Default.aspx?tabid=71&forumid=28&postid=256850&view=topic for more ideas.
What a great trip!!! When you get to the great Alpine Road make sure you stay in Bright for a night & do the full loop around, as in Bright, Mt Hotham, The Blue Duck Inn, Falls Creek, Mt Beauty & back to Bright - more twisties than you ever would have thought in a day.
Nice one boys, yeah can't wait. The map posted was just for me to get a feel for total KLM's required when booking days for ferry etc. Had a good look at that other thread will note down some of those ones as we do the itinery. Queenstown/99 Bends looks sick. Speaking of sick.... Scallop pies!!??? Awesome will hav a go. Just bought nice little Motorbike swag, 48cm x 24cm x 24cm 5kg for $169 so looking forward to some nights under the stars in the remoter areas. NYE research is coming along nicely too, ol' hobart town sounds like place 2 be! No swag those nights! (oh and there SYD-hobart race is drawn on 31st etc so should be big party times!) Yeah for Gr8 Alpine we'd like to do that over 2 days with luck as have passed by it several times and want to enjoy it.
Mate I did 4000ks around Tassie last November,it was great. 250-300ks a day, you pushing the bikes?. From D on your map (Marrawatt) to Zeehan is all dirt, not for Harley's. Around the Great Lakes is dirt on the west but on the east of the lake it is a great ride up the Mountain over to Poatina, Flintstone and on to Hobart. You can't get to E on a harley but from Bridport down to St Helens via Scottsdale is a good ride. Make sure you do the Elephant Pass between St Helens and Bicheno. Going to Southport is a waste of time, take a left at Huonviolle and come back to Hobart via Channel Hwy. It is worth the time to do the B33 to Opossum Bay. I went around and through the centre of Tassie a couple of times and I am sure you will have a good a time as I did, enjoy. The Great Alpine Way home is an excelent choise
Went over to tasmania last year, wife & i absolutely loved the place. So much to see. Friendly people, will be going back ourselves. Plus taking two sons this time, have to do it in a car, because I'm the only one that rides. It will be a top holiday for you.
Might meet up with you guys somewhere along the trek...we (Surly & Bt) will be there at about the same time, from 3-4th Jan on...Hope to do some of Vic as well....Wouldn't take much notice of Daz, he's pissed off cos he's not invited...

Anyone know if the Bogong High Plains road from Falls Creek through to Anglers Rest is sealed??
Pizzlin - yeah think i will do Mel/Wangarat/brigh/mt beauty/falls creek/anglers rest on way back, stay that night BLue duck inn then back up to Corryong via Mitta Mitta and then camp somewhere around Jindabyne or more likely Cooma
saw a road there called Snowball Road cooma to Braidwood that looks intersting and will be a topical tip after NYE
The dirt on the Bogong High Plains road is sealed with bitumen & the bitumen was sealed with snow on the weekend but it should be melted by now. A few mates of mine went up there for a ride but cut it short cos of the crap weather.
I went over there last summer in the middle of January for a nice day long cruise & it had snowed the day before, the temperature on the high plains was 8deg up on the mountain but was nice down in the valley's, Keiwa - Mt Beauty, Omeo & Ovens - Bright.
If u stay the night in the Blue Duck & want to go straight to Mitta Mitta? that road is not sealed. To get back to Corryong without going on the dirt u will have to go back up to the Bogong High Plains Rd, up (North) the Kiewa valley then head to-wards Tallangatta & on to Corryong.
A tip here would be to go up to the Hume Dam wall then cross the bridge to Bellbridge & up to Corryong via Walwa. As the Hume weir is full for the first time in 10 or more years It is a really scenic ride along the lake for 30 or so kms of it.
The trip was bloody AMAZING, really good, no stacks or injuries,
over 4,000klms completed, some great stories and the BEST riding I've ever done.
I did ride the CVO into the ground but that's another story and will post up a bit of a ride report and pics - prob should do that as a seperate thread??
In the meantime, here is a bit of poetic license i knocked up this arvo;
