trans drain plug

    G"Day,

Decided to do my own servicing on 08' FXSTC so got a manual and the bits I needed.

Drained the trans by removing the plug, but it looks like a grub screw rather than a plug with a shoulder. There didn't appear to be an o'ring with it.

I read the manual (five times!) and it says to install a new o'ring with the drain plug but I don't see how an o'ring will work with a grub screw (it's tapered).

Have I pulled out the wrong plug or is the manual incorrect.

If the plug is correct then I assume I have to coat it in teflon as with any tapered grub screw.

    Any help much appreciated.

    Cheers Swagman

update to my own post, this time the primary.

removed the primary cover and it has a large black solid gasket. The manual shows a rubber ring (which fits) so I assume the solid gasket is what they install at the factory. The service kit I got contains the rubber ring so I'll use that.

Does this mean that two different Stealerships have told me they changed the primary oil and actually haven't or do they reuse the solid black gasket/

Sounds like wrong plug removed. Look for a second hex type(aside from the engine oil one).
Gasket comes with accessory cover and is (assuming you have an accessory cover) the correct type.
Quad ring is standard factory fitment for stock derby cover.

    Thanks Dyna rider.

Yeah wrong plug, bloody hard to see the trans plug between the shocks. Ah well live and learn.

The derby cover is stock as far as I know but I have used the rubber ring anyway and I'll hang on to the black solid gasket in case.

Now to see if I've any leaks!

The three drain plugs all had some sort of goo on them, what do people generally use for this purpose? I've put the sump plug back using teflon tape which may or may not hold. Worst case I'll have to pull it out and redo it.

    Cheers

The only grub screw that I know of is the engine manufacturers screw that is lock tightened in. Mate if you haven't cracked your case then you are lucky. Trans Plug is between the shocks at the rear, Engine drain plug right rear side Frame and Primary below the inspection cover. The O'Ring type gasket is standard. The black fiber type gasket with sealing ring is also OK. I suspect you could use either one of them.

As far as sealant goes I don't use any, replace the o/rings if stuffed they are all the same size and torque to specs.

You can use any type of thread sealing goop. Loctite make a paste that works well.
