can you hurt the seals by putting too heavier oil in? like 15 or 20w? i`d like to stiffen up mine abit too 308(((-:
I have put "Motul 20W Fork Oil Expert Heavy" in my front forks and they work so much better. Mind you I did replace the front springs with Ikons and dropped the forks 5mm. The local HD dealer said they use a Shell 20W oil so I can't see any problems. The oil quantity is crictical according to the dealer. Here is the Motul link http://www.motul.com.au/product_line_up/fork_brake_others/others02.html
That's Gold ! gonna give that a go ,cheers
I wish to include a few things for all of you to consider. Raising the viscosity of the oil may not be that cure-all you are looking for. First of all, viscosity/oil weight is not measured the same from company to company. I will post a list when I crack open my other computer where it is stored on.
You may or may not know me but I develop Öhlins products exclusively for Harleys. I investigate a bunch of stuff. I also have fun trying a bunch of different stuff. The low budget upgrade I am doing maybe going against all what some is said here. You use very light weight oil that keeps its properties through a wide verity of heat ranges (your forks get very hot). The viscosity must match the valving you have on your bike. Oil height also plays a big part in bottoming out. Spring value matching the bike, riders style of riding, and rider/passengers weight + luggage. We took a local HDF member who rides a lot and knows/feels what the bike is doing.
All HD forks that are damper rod type have not changed much since 1948, my birth year. Masterblaster has a brand new Dyna. It now has 4K miles on the clock. He is out of town for a few days and will have phase two done when he returns and will be able to install his new chrome sliders (I have nothing to do with his chrome) as well as my modifications.
We will pass on our findings and if you wish to follow the modifications, no problems. I have nothing to sell as Öhlins does not do low technical. Try this linky and bring yourself up to speed.
Again, nothing for sale, just an added education and use the gray matter some.
