Install Accel SLM into a Sportster.

Sorry about the Subject line. Didn't check before I hit enter. Can not edit.

I believe my bike was running a bit lean, popping on decel and occasionally hiccuping and missing. This started after the last mod's I made.

I've added a S&S Desperado air cleaner and modified the stock pipes. Due to being in Australia and everything for HD being very expensive. I made an adapter plate out of Aluminum for the air cleaner as the one I got was for a carbed bike.

I cut the back plate out of the stock mufflers and removed all the baffling, I rode it like that for a couple of days. The booming exhaust note was too much on the highway. So I tried different size hole in the new end cap 1 3/4" hole then 1 1/2" hole and finally a 1 3/8" hole got the exhaust note to a bearable level. It did drop a little bottom end power.

I made the decision to install a Accel SLM03.

Instruction for the install of the SLM are straight forward.

Took some time to run wiring through neatly as you will see (Bit fiddly). Unit is a tight fit above battery.

Sorry about some of the photo's, older digital camera and shit photogragy.

So step 1- disconnect and remove battery.

step 2- from wiring loom diagram work out which plugs are which. And feed the rear O2 sensor down through the back of the fuse box and out.

step 3- separate O2 plugs and plug SLM plugs in.

step 4- remove (or as I did, undo) and lift tank. Choose the path you want for each wire. I followed the factory loom with both.

step 5- remove air cleaner if you dont have access the the TPS under the throttle body. And drop new loom down and out under air cleaner. Unplug TPS and plug in SLM plugs.  NOTE; TPS plug not perfect fit. BE very careful not to bend pins.

step 6- run front O2 plugs & Crank angle Sensor plug forward along the loom.

step 7- unplug front O2 sensor (black plugs) and plug in SLM plugs.

step 8- unplug crank angle sensor plugs (grey plugs) and plug in SLM plugs.

step 9- remove ECU plug and open up to find pin No 13, White/black wire. I reconnected battery and checked I have the right pin with a multimeter (just over 9 volts with key on 12 volts with key and run switch).

step 10- using t-tap and blade-terminal connectors supplied I made a power lead as the wire on the SLM was not long enough. Then test it with multimeter.
I don't like using these connectors and will solder a better connection in at a later date once I know I'm happy with unit.

step 11- with it all hooked up I did a system check. Led flashed red/green as required.
so I fire it up. after about 90 second it went green as required. shut it down.

step 12- I ride in all weather conditions so I roughed out covers for the plug down the front using a tyre tube.

step 13- tied up the loom.

step 14- I decided to fit the unit between the frame and the battery, so I raped the unit with tyre tube for a bit of extra protection.

step 15- slide unit under frame. Finish putting bike back together.

    Bike started fine.

Just a quick note, I have seen people post complaints about the check engine light coming on after starting the bike. In the instructions it tells you about the start up diagnostic system check mode the SLM dose this every time the bike is started and it will flash the fuel injection light (check engine light depending on model) as a part of its system checks.
