Aftermarket speedo?

Gday all. The speedo on my 95 Heritage Softail has been a bit dodgy since i bought the bike, and thought it was about time i addressed it so spoke to a repairer and he told me it would be better to just buy an aftermarket speedo and whack that in.

Apparently he has fixed a fair few Harley speedo's but they often shit the bed again before long.

Anyway, does anyone know where i might be able to get a speedo to suit? Has anyone tried any and found them to be good or bad? Its cable driven so that knocks out most of them i have seen.

    Cheers.

Plenty of cable driven after-market ones around, getting one with KPH on it could be a task

    Thanks guys.
Kiwidave my problem seems to be in the speedo itself as far as i can see. I had a look at the cable when i first got it and it seemed to spin freely and easily, and the odometer and trip meter run accurately.
My speedo generally reads faster than im going but not by a common amount, and sometimes after stopping it takes a minute or 2 to return back to 0.

Good point about the electric speedo's, i'll give him a call back to check which type he was talking about.
    Cheers.

sam, you can still pick up an origonal harley speedo for your maodel, in good nick, personally id keep the origonal one thats in it & have it repaired, ive used & do still use after market speedo's , and have found the quality "cheap" all depends on you, if you dont mind non origonal on your bike, ive got a collection from 1936 to 1970+ just about all 1 of each all restored, thats when steward warner supplied to hd. that changed in the later 70's quality droped, l only put "el cheapo" speedo's on cause l cant bring myself to use one out of the glass case..(on older bikes)as for having harley speedo's repaired its not that simple, very few have the equipment , let alone axcess to the needed parts if they are still available, & a harley speedo repaired properl will last a very long time.. l dont see the guys who restore them anymore, they were old then, 1 died eating a pie, he had the calibrating machine, that sounds like what yours needs , calibrating, if its still working o.k. no needle bounce & returnes to zero quickly, calibrate!!!!!

    Hi kickinon,
I replaced the speedo on my 89 Heritage early last year, I got one that has the in-built tacho.
The original has done 132,000km and is still in good working order, if you want it PM me.
    Cheers,
    Cris.

Just thought i'd ask, is your speedo front wheel driven or gear box dreven? or gearbox sensor?

If its fast, & front wheel drien could check the ratio of the front wheel drive were cable screws in as was a few different ratio's to compensate i think for wheel diamiter but not positive. some speedo's were made to use 1 to 1 ratio some 2 to 1 ratio. you can put a small allen head into the cable screw in with the wheel drive off the bike, turn the part that turns with front whhel around once, count how many times the cable drive part turns to see what ratio is.
