Okay, bought my first Harley back in january after an extended period without a bike. Fallen hook line and sinker for my Sporty 1200c and finally feel I have got back my old riding skills. Gotta say, took a lot longer than I would have guessed.

Anyway, I intended joining a bike club for the camaraderie and the rides, but the longer time goes on the more skeptical I am about certain groups. This is mainly caused by people I know who recite tales about groups and in particular HOG. This is mainly about many HOG chapters not being that welcoming and being a little too opinionated about us mere mortals who only ride Sportys. Ulysses club sounds interesting, but been told its an old peoples club and not much fun. I have had MCA recommended, but not heard enough to judge.

Just wondering if you guys (n gals) have any pointers/suggestions as the rumour and heresay is really starting to piss me off. I live in Sydney (Hills district) by the way

I am in Ulysess and enjoy it, like some one said befor, it's what you make it. Some of the people are old and some are younger and you can pick up some good tips from them.  They have over 27,000 active members Aust wide and also have clubs in other countries that will welcome you with open arms. If you are interestd in finding out more I would suggest finding out where your local branch is and make you self known to them and find out if it's for you or not.   www.ulyssesclub.org/Default.aspx

Blackadder best thing to do is attend a few rides with different clubs you have a interest in most clubs will let you come for a few rides with them before you are asked to join that way you get to know them and if it feels right for you then you may decide to join if not walk away and by the way nothing wrong with Sportie's I owned four of them myself they are a great bike cheers.

It saddens me to see what has happened to the Ulysses, they were once a great larikin club, great parties and fun rides. Nowadays the rides are at speed limits with the road captain and tail end Charlie in flouro vests. I am a member of HOG and yes some chapters can be clicky others are down to earth knock about people. I enjoy the rallies because the best part is getting there.

    Cheers for the comments/suggestions guys.

I read the rules and regs for some of the clubs and it puts me off a little. Sounds too regimented in some cases, although I do see the need for structure on rides. Suppose I dont like being controlled, get enough of that at home from the wife!

I think I will do as you suggest and rock up to a couple of clubs to suss them out and who knows from there

Blackadder, I'm a new rider (12 months) so need all the input I can get. First up, I can have a quick run with a couple of blokes anytime at all because they are locals that ended up in my phone from just bumping into them hooning around the Northern Beaches. (Michael who was on the 3 Ferries yesterday fits this category, and ditto Bill and Linda, locals that I met on the only HOG ride I've done). Also a few blokes on jappas and BMWs who are good company and like most riders looking for someone to ride with - considering how inferior they think the HD is you can imagine my satisfaction every time we stop and a rider or non-rider comes up to look at my Fat Boy and ignores the other bikes!)

I found the HOG ride ok, if a bit regimented but considering there were 100 bikes I guess they need to be - definitely worth a run occasionally, and there were some Forum members there who went out of their way to introduce themselves and get a Forum members photo. (G'day Tony).

Just joined Ulysses and had one run with them. Once again all of the good including a couple of "girls" of "mature" years who were brilliant riders, but no other Harleys on that ride. They were all experienced riders though on high performance bikes and that day I was on my Iron and it was pretty hard work.

BY FAR the best group to ride with is the Forum blokes. A very diverse bunch of HD lovers who are incredibly supportive. They baby me a bit but pretend not to. Get into this group and you'll never look back. If you let people here know you need some road hours I'm sure you'll end up getting all you can use.

    A footy club,

you can get busted off ur dial on drugs in ya car (bike too possibly) and not even get touched up by the coppers.

I will be wearing an Essendon Bombers jumper over my leather jacket to edenhope just in case, wonder if it works for loud pipes???

I'm a Ulysses member and overall the organisation itself is pretty good, but the local chapter where I am ride metric bikes. I see them most Saturdays at the meeting place drinking latte's and posing for an hour or more before they head out in their fluoro vests for a putt to the next latte hole...

A couple of HD riders I know met up for the local chapter for a ride and were greeted with negative comments about their choice of ride so fug 'em.....they can stick their attitude up their metric arses...

Go start building up your experiences, start with what YOU think suits you. 10 -20 years from now you'll look back at the rich experiences you've had. What ever you do and where ever you go build on it. What is right for me or others here now may not suit you right now. Get out there, ride, meet people, most of, all enjoy. Its a trip, start it now.

I reckon the "you sissy's" club will soon fade away to just the very rare ocasional patch in the crowd judging by all the feedback ive heard about them, but i suppose thats what ya get with a club that any tom dick or harry can join.
