OK, go easy on me here fellas and yes I have used the search function but couldn't find the answers..
1. I want to run mineral oil and do more frequent oil changes rather than run synthetic and do less frequently.... Besides the HD (dealer recommended) oil - what MINERAL oil is best to use??
2. For the cooler climates of Victoria and Tasmania..... do I use 10W-40 or 20W-50?? or something else? Dealer says 20W-50 but I don't trust anything a dealer says....

In my 1982 GoldWing I use Castrol Active 20W50, This is a good product and correct for this bike except that the starter clutch sticks on hot starts which means I should be using the 10W40 recomended by owners manual, and despite my wanting to use a heavier grade oil because it's a 147,000 klm old motor fact is the maker new what was right and lets face it, it has lasted 28 years.
There are Synthetic versions, but the ones I listed are mineral, and about $35 for 5 litres. HPR Gas10 is a semi Syn 10w50 that I use in my KTM 950

Change your oil frequently, use what the manufacturer recommends, how can you go wrong?
I've ridden and serviced 4 Harleys over the last 20 years......shovels and evos...........always used Valvoline XLD (YEAH! The cheapish stuff you can buy from supermarket!!)on the Evos after recommendation from HD mechanic. Never had a problem.
Now I'm on a Twin cam, XLD doesn't suit, after some research, decided to use what the manufacturer uses and recommends..........Harley Davidson 20W50...........after all, they use it to service their bikes under 2 year, unlimited km warranty....at 8,000kay intervals!
I think that should speak for itself.........however since I ride my bikes pretty hard.......I change engine oil and filter at 4,000km intervals, using the same HD recommended oil!
Why spend more money.............IMO.. frequency of oil change beats (so called) oil quality everyday!
I spose you can run what you like............If your happy to pay the extra! As long as the oil meets the manufacturers specifications! Your call.
Burto, thanks for your input...... There's nothing wrong with the "Harley Davidson" oil. I was just looking for an alternative to the HD branded oil, thats all.

I always used mineral oil in motors, mostly Kendal 20w 50w or any mineral Turbo Diesel oil, & changed it regular.
then about two years back after closely watching a mate that races & pulls his motors down regularly, he went from mineral to Redline oil, i saw how the redline oil was stoping a lot of wear & tear that the mineral was'nt. then i went with Redline, the Redline guy from WA said for what i was doing i could leave the oil in 12 months or more, so i did. i also went to Redline Heavy Shockproof gear oil in gearbox (Five Speed twin cam ) the box shifted beautiful still does three years on had motor ( top & bottom end ) apart once since it works so i'm sticking to it, was looking in my friends top bike motor last night can see how the redline oil impregnates ( for a better word ? ) itself into the metal , they used to run Aluminum rods no bearings in some of the older Top Fuel ( Nitro ) motors and saw the difference between mineral and Redline oil, now the motors he runs have a car type rod clevite bearings, can't use rollers like the street harleys as 90%+ Nitro the shock loads are too high for roller bearings.
but in the end i don't give a bugger what you all use.

Thanks - seems like good product..... but if you are going to run a synthetic "car oil" isn't Mobil 1 supposed to be the best?
