I too looked at that site, and found it very confusing, si I sent them an email as below.

    Dave

Motorcycle spares/engine spares (except exhausts) do not attract duty but GST is payable. GST is paid on the combined value of-
    - The transaction value of the part and
    - The cost of freight and insurance.

    G?day

If buy some motorcycle parts from the USA that cost more than $1000.00, what would be the duty and taxes that I would have to pay.

    And this.

    Dear Dave

Exhausts would be 5% Customs Duty and 10% gst.
    Kind regards,

As mentioned above I think you would be up for say:

    Exhaust say $1000

    Freight say $200

add 5% Duty to the parts so plus $50

then add 1000 and 200 and 50 (makes 1250) and add 10% gst of 125 making total of 1375

In other words, add about 13% to your total out of the US

You may well get hit with an "Entry Fee" of about $50 too.

It's been a while since I bought anything over a grand. I got my V&H 's in under the grand. Keep your fingers crossed!

You were just dead lucky Shadow!! Tends to be more luck in smaller towns too. My mate in Coffs Harbour got everything (that was sent by mail) delivered to his workbench free of taxes etc. I got clobbered every single time once the items were over a grand. They can actually hit you under a grand if they want to! One time I receieved 2 parcels worth $750 each that were sent a week apart from the same supplier in NZ. They arrived in Perth on the same day so were then classified as 1 shipment of $1500 so I had to pay all the fees!!! If you get angry with them it just gets worse. There is no other Customs Dept to go to!

When I bought my wheels and rotors from Renegade I paid over $600 in Import Duty and GST............. but I was expecting it. Always best to keep it under the grand and you can pretty much guarantee you'll be OK. Maybe you should start a small import business mate!!! :))

In one of my businesses I order quite a bit from OS and I always allow 15%

Depending how Customs feel on the day though, you can get some goods over the 1000 mark that will not get picked up. I think sometimes they are just too busy.

I just make sure now that I keep it under $1k!
