Its interesting that
1 - Green Slip came about as (theoretically) a way of keeping CTP prices low. Lets go back a few years and remember the advertising spruiking that making CTP completely private was in our interests.
- In most states and territories there is only one approved provider of CTP insurance, however NSW and QLD offer vehicle owners a choice of insurer. Premiums are dependent upon the type of vehicle and who will be driving it.
2 - Any rider contributed accident rarely causes third party damage of any substantial level, either personal or property, as the object causing the damage is relatively small compared to a motor car.
Therefore, based on what actuarial studies do they come back with figures that show that the CTP Premiums for motor cycles doesnt cover the cost of payouts, expenses and profit margin for the shareholder.
This is obviously just another cash grab, as I havent seen a marked increase in high damage or large third party personal injust accidents where the motorcyclist is at fault. Since each type of vehicle is supposed to support itself as a percentage, then this immediately shows there is a definite issue with the costing changes on CTP policies.
Indicative pricing from NRMA for CTP Policies
2010 Scania 16L V8 730hp - $4009 Annual CTP - Travels approx 160,000km per annum
2009 Holden Stateman 6L V8 - $452 Annual CTP - Travels approx 25,000km per annum
2010 Harley Davidson 1.6L V2 Softail - $639 Annual CTP - Travels approx 10,000km per annum
Based on the above vehicles, all relatively new, and therefore in good order and condtion. All travelling vastly different km per annum. All very powerful vehicles. The relative injury that each would cause and therefore CTP costs based on actual due to vehicle type, how is it that the smallest and least likely to be involved in an accident causing third party injury, has a CTP cost higher than a vehicle which would create greater damage to third parties in an accident. Fair enough, the truck is expensive, but its heavy, powerful, and would cause a great deal of pain if it run over you. But the comparison of the car to the bike. Just ridiculous, and any insurance company would have a hard time justifying such an expensive CTP policy for the bike and 70% of the same for the car. Im sure there would be more CTP costs involved if I run someone over in the car compared to the bike.
