That's about what I meant. When coming up to a stop, try slowing down until it almost starts to coast, then change down. I can only suggest you try different riding styles until you match one with the bike. You can also get someone else to ride it and see if it still does it for them. Never a dull moment, think of how bored you'd be if things like this didn't keep you on the boil....beagle

I've got an'08 Softy. To change either up or down I preload the lever (apply preassure up or down before a change) as the clutch comes in (about half way) the pressure on the lever makes the shift , smoothly and quickly. The only clunk I experience is the engaging first from stationary.

I have 09 fatboy and its the best gear change ive had on any harley so far. The 96" cube have a heavier duty clutch for the bigger motor. Will clunk into first from neutral but not while ridding. The free play at your leaver should be about 5mm.

I found with my bike that it took quite a few thousand ks for things to free up, that included the clutch....And it also pays to check oil levels...If there is too much oil in the prime chain case it could cause clutch drag....your owners manual give ya the amount that should be in there....
