     Hey all,

This is my first Harley and I just wanted to know if the (what I would call violent) CLUNK when changing gear is normal?  Especially gearing down.

My Jap cruiser would clunk - but this is pretty load - Normal??

Hmm... It just seems like it drops in rather hard!! :(

It is definitely more noticeable on down shift

Changing Trans oil to synthetic may help and possibly adjusting the clutch. My bike clunks on the way down through the gears as well but not what I would call violent.

Adjust the clutch, change the primary oil, and use Redline Shockproof in the transmission. You'll notice a huge difference.

    Thans guys,

Put a coupe of hundred Ks on it today. Only seems a bit clunky going back to 2nd and 1st when moving slowly through traffic.

    Cheers

well they alll clunk a little anyway, but as others have said with better lubes, run it in for a couple thou k's--and the kicker is--- a really good clutch adjustment will help make the difference betweeen night and day. Also while new keep up with the slack in the cable at the clutch lever. It will loosen considerably while it's running (stretching) in.

Yep mine does that too, but when it is warmed up and you are say coming down from 3rd to second as you approach an intersection, does yours clunk when you drop it back to second??

Mine makes a sort of Clunk-Bump sound!! There is definitely two clunks. Almost like it bounces. Clunk-Bump. If that makes sense!!

Ok so I have 700 clicks on this thing and the gear changing is still loud and clunky.

Only between 1st and 3rd, and especially gearing down when slowing. It is really off putting as it sounds like it cant be healthy!!

I have heard that. But how can it not be doing damage. It sounds like metal slamming into metal!

I am trying to be funny... just trying to understand how the gearbox works.

    Cheers

Does your clutch cable have about three mm slack at the lever end. If not adjust it to that gap or a tiny bit smaller and see if it helps, but ensure there is still some free play at the lever end. The transmission oil needs to warm up a bit and don't change down like on a japper. These things don't have slipper clutches. Just take it nice and easy. They take a few thousand K's to settle in. Mine has 20K's on it and still clunks when I'm not concentrating on what I'm doing with the gear change and clutch shift not happening together, which is often. The more you think about it, the crazier you'll become...just ignore it.... it'll go away...

Just a thought, it could possibly be your riding style ?
Not trying to state the obvious, but something you just do instinctively, you match revs with road speed and gear selection.
It is even possible to change gears fairly smoothly without using the clutch.
Do you blip the throttle on down change ?

    Thanks guys,

I have tried to blip the throttle on down shift, but it does not seem to make a difference.

BEAGLE - When you say "Dont change down like a Jappa" what exactly do you mean?

I will have a look at the clutch adjustment too.

    Thanks
