HONDA XR 650-I know, I know not a Harley. BUT, I'm looking at getting an XR 650 for some fun in the bush. You don't see them too often for sale “ever” and I have come across a couple. They are 2000 and 2001 L & R models. I know the basics as in when I thrash them and they run and sound ok and no oil is pouring out everywhere after my ride then they are ok. But is there any mad moto x’s/Crusty Demons/Honda mechanics in here that might know what to look for in these bikes. Any common faults with them that you know of? As far as I know Honda and especially these monsters were pretty good. Hence why they are never for sale, everyone wants to keep them.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers in advance........

Make sure it has a cush-drive rear hub,
otherwise they're murder on the gear-box...

Don't buy one without cush-drive thinking you will put one on,
as the damage is most likely allready done.

    and of course
ride it like you stole it

Cheers for that. I will check and make sure it has one. After a littler research on the cush drive it looks as though it's worth having one and like you say, before I get the bike....On some forums people have said they are not worth it if your not racing at all but most have said just ripping it up will save you $$$$'s. At the end of the day that's what I like to hear :)

I'll keep looking for common problems with the bikes, the more info I get before getting one the better. They are 9 and 10 years old so I'm hoping that most of the work as in re builds etc would have been done already. As long as they aren't ready for the next re build.......

    Cheers

    Willee.....

    Just go one step better
And sit your ass on a KTM 640 LC4.

    If it,s not orange, it,s a lemon

    Good-luck in your search

never had a XR650 but had 92, 95,97,99 XR600's absolutely bulletproof and i dont see why the XR650 would be any different. Whack on a staintune pipe with a ballards header pipe, re valve the rear shock to suit your ridin weight , fill her up with Av gas and let rip.........top gear wheelies and powerslides every where you go !   brings back memories......Mmm wheres that just bikes mag ??
