Gear Shifter not springing back into place after change up or down

    Hi all...

Was wondering if anyone could help me with an issue I have "caused" on my 1993 Sporty (XL1200).

I've replaced the dirty old primary case with a new chrome one and the change over went suprisingly well, and looks a million dollars too!

    Then I rode it home...!

The trouble is that when I change gears the gear shifter doesn't "spring" back into place every time.  I noticed it when changeing down but saw it happen going up as well.

It does go into all gears fine although when changeing down, I have to help it back to middle position before I can change down again...

I have tried moving the gear shifter away from the rubber seal that sits on the shaft outside the primary cover a little bit but then the screw doesn't want to do up to tighten that back up.

I also notice that, once in first gear, if I push the gear shifter down as though changeing down it does spring back fine...?

Next thought was a bit of CRC but I wondered if anyone had any ideas before I went there...

Thanks for any help in advance.

darkshine, if it was ok before you altered it then its probably something you have done,
sounds like something rubbin/touchin against something it shouldnt be, the springs are not very strong that flick the lever back into place, so's it doesnt take much for it to foul,
take another look , take your time,

Did it spring back before you changed the outer primary cover?

    Thanks for the replies guys.

It was actually the bush in the new primary cover that was doing it (it was tighter than the old one as it is newer.

So a bit of grease on her and away we go.

    Thanks for your input anyways.
