Question re Pipes

     Hi Lads,

I am about to take delivery of my new Fatty and have been looking at some pipes that will go on in the not too distant future.

I like the Radius, and probably the 2 into 1, however, the dealer told me today that I would not need to worry about retuning unless I change the AirBox.

Now, my last bikes have all been Carby, and I know you can't change the pipes out without re-jetting etc - So am looking for some advice here.

    Cheers

     Right!

Surprising!!  I though once I opened the pipes up I would need to adjust the air!!  Obviously the injection system can handle it.

Wrong!!!!!! Sorry Mongrel but the standard Harley off the floor is set to run as lean as possible in order to pass California noise and pollution regulations. The only reason that you can't hear the popping and backfiring is because they've deliberately choked the system in order to supress noise. Now, once you open up the exhaust side by flicking the original system it will want to suck more air. Therefore, air to fuel ratio will be even leaner than original. The result will be an increase in popping/backfiring on deccelarisation. This is not good for any engine as it also increases running temperatures. The answer to this is to enrichen the fuel mixture. The best way to do this is to get rid of the restrictive air cleaner and replace with an SE Stage I, or whatever you might choose, and then the most expensive part is to retune your bikes ECM (Electronic Control Module). There are several ways to do this (most of which are discussed in other areas of this forum), but for instance the Screaming Eagle Pro Tuner will allow you to progressively adjust the tuning of your ECM according to the modifications that you choose at the time.

Note that the Dealers will not tell you about this problem because -
    1. They will make a profit by selling you the aftermarket pipes
    2. After you start complaining about the popping/ backfiring they will then sell you the aircleaner and SE Pro Tuner that they were always gunna sell you in the first place
3, They will charge you an extortionist amount for the fitting and adjustment of the above while knowing that in most cases they can get away with it

    DARKRIDER,

Thanks mate. I did notice that it rumbles a bit much during deceleration. Not a backfire as such, but a slight popping.

So the question is - if I get myself a tuner and adjust myself, am I going to screw my warranty? The bike is like 70kms old!! :)

OK - So here are a couple of questions from a dumb newbie!!

I only have a set of slip on slash cut pipes from the stealer. I want to install Kuryakyn Corsair Air Cleaner - http://www.jpcycles.com/product/402-063?N=28005193+28003198+274367&results=100 So I have worked out that I will need to retune.

So... is it a once off - to tune that is - or something I will need to do regularly? Can the dealer simply tune it without the need to but the unit? Sorry for the questions. Just trying not to blow the budget!! :)

    Cheers

Man... just seems like a lot of coin to just tune once, and sit on the shelf!! :(

Maybe someone lives near me in Canberra and can tune for me for some coin :)
