I have a '79 Sporty that has recently (supposedly about 1500 miles ago) had a complete engine rebuild, 40 thou over, Andrews cam, Crane single fire ignition etc etc. It appears to be running an oem carby and does not perform anywhere near what I think it should. Advice on a replacement carby and recommendation of a decent HD mechanic on the Sunshine Coast (or Brisbane northern suburbs) would be sensational. Experience on the older HD's would be great. Cheers.
"Full rebuild" was the description given to me by the previous owner, have receipts for cylinder rebore, 40 thou oversize pistons with rings etc, Andrews cams (don't have the paperwork with me at work but "grind 2" rings a bell???), cyl heads reconditioned-no new valves just refaced, resurfaced and new seats cut, valve stem seals replaced., all bottom end bearings replaced, all seals and gaskets replaced and Crane single fire ignition fitted. Gearbox untouched I think and new friction plates fitted to clutch. That is all I can recall, was done by some crowd in Sydney whose name eludes me. Bike starts and runs fine but lacks power up hills-struggles to maintain posted open road speed limit and does not rev freely. According to past owner has done between 1500 and 1600 miles since all work was done. Engine sounds ok mechanically just does not seem to perform as I would expect. Have had a little advice from "experts" in the field that the original carby may be the problem.
I have ridden various different bikes most of my life (16 to 48) and although I have not practiced the black art for some time, am a qualified mechanic (not motorcycle!). That should be enough to qualify me to make the statement that performance is a bit sad. Looking for a good HD mechanic who doesn't mind working on the older stuff and who is not too far away.....I am at the bottom of the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
sounds like it could do with a good tune as the old girl should be fast enough to clock about 190 klms speed flat out ,
Any suggestions as to "where" in my neck of the woods?? Bottom end of the Sunshine Coast.
Thanks, will look them up and give them a go when I get home next week.
Chris.
I was up that way not long ago and stuck my head into Heavy Duty Harley..........seem a nice honest bunch........worth a look i feel......
Tried Geoff at Tune n Choppers and they have come up trumps, good guy and down to earth, also seems the "full rebuild" by previous owners may be a bit doubtful unfortunately....may have to pencil one in for the future sometime ...bugger!!
