OK, so finally got all of the chores out of the way and got into fitting the 883 low rear shocks I got from Birch. Start with the before ride height:

Now the after ride height with shocks on the lowest setting:

Fianlly the ride height on the middle setting:

Here is how I supported the rear of the bike for changing them - I went with using the tie downs to the roof method, thanks SIR883:

And here is how she sits now:

Took it out for a quick shake down ride, and very happy. The ride is slightly firmer than standard, but actually matches the short travel, firm front suspension more closely. I set them on the middle of the five preload settings as a start point. It scrapes a bit more than previous, but not hugely more. The main different is the front exhaust bracket and the side stand touch down earlier, where before the foot peg doinks gave an early warning. I dont think I will go for any less preload and hence even lower, but also don't want the ride any firmer, so middle setting looks like the go. Might look into getting the shorter side stand as well - how have you found it using the standard length side stand SIR883? Mine seems to sit much more upright on the stand than before.

The only things that disappointed me about my Iron were that all the ads, Harley info, pics on the various Harley web sites, and yes the TV ad that first got me looking all show American spec models with the low rear ride height and the side mount number plate. I always thought these two things really made the look of the bike. When the Aussie models were delivered with longer rear shocks and the ugly plastic crap hanging off the rear fender, I thought they just had to go. I fitted the side mount plate within a week of having the bike, and now with the 883 low rear shocks I finally feel like I have the bike I wanted all along.

TC, well done with the pics

Great job. I know what exactly what your saying about the ads. Even the australian site 2011 models show the 11" rear shocks. A bit deceiving.

I actually dont mind the back mounted plate number, stream lines the bike. Regarding the side stand i have never really noticed. I might now since you've mentioned it.

r u gonna powder coat the shocks u reckon?

    Hi All

I am new to the forum and I am another iron owner. One of the next mods I want to do to the bike is to change the rear shocks but I am undecided on what lenght to get. I was thinking on putting a set of 11 inch shocks on but from what I have read a few guys have had problems with pipes scraping on the ground (dont want to scratch my new set of V&H SS) before the feelers?

I was maybe thinking of going 11.5 inch. Any comments/recommendations from people who have put lower shocks on their iron/nightster would be appreciated.

    Thanks

They have improved the rear suspension on the new 883 SuperLow by fitting a low profile rear tyre (I think its a Michelin). This has let them add an extra 15mm to the rear suspension travel because there is now more clearance between the tyre and the rear guard. Might be worth considering a modification along those lines?

They've also increased the seat cushion depth without raising the height by shifting some of the goodies under the seat out of the way.

    Hi TC

Yep from what I have seen it is a pretty popular bike.

Thanks for the advice. I agree that the 11 inch shocks definitely looks a lot better than the stock ones.

It would be great if you could post a pic of your bolt on the rear attachment point otherwise I would probably be scratching away for ages trying to figure out what you have done!

    Cheers

    Hey all. Virgin post.

Noticed a few of you were looking for black shocks for Iron 883....
These are in a kit, but maybe you can buy them individually??
Im a bobber fan, and are finally about to dive into a Iron 883 bobber custom, so maybe your tastes differ.

Mount points may differ, but im sure its still a good guide.

And you can get a Slammer Kit from Burly Brand in black, meaning short shocks and a drop-in fork lowering kit.
Burly Brand I'm pretty sure is Progressive suspension just a bit cheaper.
