Hi, Ive just recently started having problems starting my 87 softail, i had to actually push start it yesterday!! Anyway, when it starts its rough as guts and farting, as it gets warm when im riding it get progressivley better until after 2-3 minutes its running smoothly. I think it might be water in the fuel as when i leave it longer (days) it is worse. I usually ride every day and ive just had a major service about two weeks ago. Does anyone have any ideas? Its got a stretch tank so the tap isnt the lowest point of the tank and im thinking when i leave it for some time water is settling in the rear lowest part of the tank, then on start up the water saturated fuel at the bottom of the tank is being sucked into the tap/hose towards the carb. After running for a few minutes the movement and vibrations mix the water as well as the fact that its hot and the fuel evaporates/burns easier/faster? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, do my theories sound plausible??? Cheers
If you suspect water contamination simply drain everything from the tank and fuel lines and refill with fresh fuel.
If the problem persists, then you know it's not water contamination and you have to look further.
done it, still the problem persists. cheers anyway mate.
