Bike service

As I have allready stated on another thread I just had my 16,000km service done but something the mechanic did has me wondering?? After he drained the oil and removed the filter he then ran the motor for about 10 seconds or so to purge the remaining cupla hundred ml of oil out of it. When I asked him if that was a good idea he very quickly said you can not do any damage by doing this and he always does this with any service. What do you guys reckon,he seems to know his stuff and i am no expert but running the engine without oil in it did not seem like a great idea ??

That's not something I would do, Ten seconds PROBABLY wont hurt anything but I certainly wouldn't recommend it and I wouldn't be going back to him either

The reality is that it is probably no worse than starting your bike after a couple of days of just sitting and because the bike was still warm the cylinders would have had oil on them.Anyway I think I will tell him not to do it again just in case.

Peter, not sure about how many klicks before a rebuild, probably depends on how you ride! I expect my 95ci to outlive me, as I ride like one of those old guys on a scooter....
but re the issue of running the motor to get the last of the old oil out, I've read about that on US forums before, didn't seem to be that uncommon. I even saw a 'how to' for a Sporty, where you fill the tank with new oil, then stick a hose on the oil return line and start the motor to see when the fresh oil comes out.

I was on HD talking the other day and came across

The Scavenger Total Oil Change System

    http://www.roguechopper.com/

This would stop the need to run the motor for a few seconds to T the old oil

Yeah I have seen the system Bull, but I don't really think it's that neccesary to scavenge the last few hundred ml of oil,I will just change mine and leave it at that.

I've done my oil changes for the past 18 years and on all the bikes I do the Motor oil last. Drain first, remove oil filter, refill last. Fill oil tank with 1and a half to 2 litres of new oil or so then start the bike and wait ( approx 30 secs.) until black oil becomes new. (looking and feeling oil that seeps thru oil filter outlet.) Switch off, put new filter on ( always K&N) and top up to proper level. Never had a problem and always have clean oil in at the beginning, no shit left in the sump or lines.

Interesting, I remember reading once years ago a similar practice, but not actually starting the bike, but turning the bike over with the kicker with the plugs out, to clear the last bit of dirty oil. Can't do that with the new bikes, so that's his modern version of an old practice. Sort of a lazy shortcut.

I go with the conventional, good oil and filter changed at prescribed intervals, will leave the unconventional to those that can afford a new motor or two.
