G'day all,
The old girl has just done 50k and I think I will pull the cam cheat cover off to check the condition of the tensioners, and if they need replacing I was wondering if I have to pull the plate off I would like to fit one of them Baisley oil pressure springs and the newer and better type of oil pump to my older 1998 cam support plate. The motor was rebuilt back in 2000 and Harley replaced the crank, cam plate ( PN 24598.99), oil pump, pistons, cylinders and they put in torrinton bearings and I had fitted AP TW 50 cams and quite a few other bits so as ya can see if the tensioners need replacing I would rather do them hoping that the new set will last till 100k and then maybe I will go for another upgrade up to say a 98' with gear driven cams.
Whats ya thoughts
Thanx
Stinga
You will need to upgrade your Cam plate as well to suit the newer HD oil pump, Harley sells a kit (look at part 25284-08). Or you can fit a Fueling Oil pump to your old plate at around $400usd. All depends how much you want to spend, but the cheapest option is just to replace your tensioners if they are worn, along with new cam bearings, and just inspect your old pump and re-use if OK.
You can also go with the latest hydraulic setup, but you will need new cams as well, or there's Gear drive Cams. Gets expensive.
Speedzter,
Thanks mate for ya input, on the US sites there is this bloke who can supply everything needed to go the full upgrade to the new cam plate, pump with roller chains cams or gear drivin cams, even blue and red loctite, all "o" rings and gaskets but ya need to get new cam for about US$700. I have payed my fair share of the Harley tax already so i will doin the check and change of the tensioners but it's a bit like opening a can of worms ya dont whats in there until ya get the lid off.
I just done this conversion upgrade & it cost me $640 US including Andrews cams. I just individually ordered parts through M&M's. Cam bearings from Statewide Bearings - $22 for 2.
If you want all the P/N for upgrade PM me & I will give them to you as well as prices what M&M charged me
