Due to an oversite on my part ( read lazy ) my rear brakepads have worn down to the metal, now i have metal deposits on the disc, it doesn't appear to be gouged but layered on to the disc, now ,do i scrape it carefully off, sand it or give it to the professionals.
I promise i won;t do it again!
Looks like your right, i've had a closer look after taking the brake caliper off and it doesn't look real good so where is a good place to get a disc and a set of pads without paying through the nose? Before someone says it yes i know you shouldn't buy cheap parts especially brake components but we're not all flush with cash, i'm not after cheap shit just well priced parts. Anyone?
It is a 1997 FXD,i'll try and see if i can get some of the metal off somehow, razorblade?
gmeikle, thanks mate i'll give that a go, there doesn't appear to be any scoring so i'll pick up some pads next week and let you know what happens. I'm bloody kicking myself cause i only changed the pads on my other bike a few days ago. oh well it's the first time i've run them this low in 30 odd yrs of riding. cheers
hi check if the disc is dished in or out check with a steel ruler or straight edge if its flat you can have is surface grind $50 if its not below the min thickness i remember is .180 " , try use sport soft compound pads as these don't wear the disc as much as slintered metal type do but don't last as long ,
I've cleaned up the disc with wet and dry ,much better but not real good have decided to bite the bullet and buy a new one $150 from Rollies and $60 for the pads.
hi, flush bleed new brake fluid untill clean fluid comes out , flush out every 6mths esp rear they over heat + the fluid goes off + use the front brake more + try not too lean on the rear too much at speed the brake will last more , the front is your main brake
