Shovel Question

G'Day guys. Couple of questions. Was talking to a bloke last night about a 74 Shovel. He mentioned that it is "popping" thru the rear cylinder exhaust. He said he thought it was a dodgy valve, but also mentioned that the Stator is fucked and only making about 9V. Could it be then running off the battery and somehow interfering with the timing? Appreciate any thoughts.. Also, what sort of costs are involved in getting new electrics? Im new to Shovels and dont know bugger all about them.

    Cheers guys

Incredibly hard to diagnose without a hands on. Low voltage being produced by a faulty stator/ regulator could be a factor as could carb, coil, timing, plugs etc.
the list goes on. Electrics are usually the cause (Though not always, )and the state of components including the wires themselves are a factor in all this. It could be a sticking valve or a lifter in need of replacing. You mention it's a 74. Do you mean year or capacity? A 1974 Shovel that has had a hard life would need a fair bit of TLC . Shovels are fairly simple, cantankerous and extremely addictive beasties to own. Although I must admit some hate them I happen to love them. Get them right and they will love you back.
