Brake line modification

    Hi all,

Well I just got a set of black drag bars from my local HD dealer and of course I have now discovered that the front brake line is just too short.   I was suprised to find out that HD don't sell new pre-made lines with varying top flexible hose lengths for when people change to drag/apehangers etc.  All I really need done is the top hose lengthened by a few centremetres and also the banjo connection changed from a straight to either a 45 or 90 degree one.   Other than getting a whole new brake line made up (which looks like my only option thus far) does anybody know if anyone around can modify the existing Harley ones?  I really though that the flexible hose at the top could simply be removed and a new longer hose/banjo crimped on (professionally of course).

    Dan.

Wow steamer... I didn't even bother checking the catalogue becasue I went into my local dealer and asked for a longer pre-made harley brake line and the technician (head tech btw) just shrugged his shoulders and said they don't make them.  So then I asked so what do people do then when they get different bars? he said you need to get a custom cable made.  So then I asked so what do you guys do when you change bars for someone? he said they send the bike to a place down the road to get a line made up!!

Anyway I have been in a few times now asking questions and it is very clear to me now that the harley dealer really has either no idea or they don't care.

The catalogue has quite a few to select from and even in blacked out which is what I was after (diamond black braided lines).   They even mention a brake line kit so you can make them.   I have the part number I think is the one (46779-09) now all i gotta do is work out what length it is... the catalogue and doing google searches say nothing about the overall length and can't even find a picture of it... argh!

Thanks steamer.  Yes I have ordered quite a few things from M&M cycles they are really good, you can definately trust them.    You prob already know this but just make sure any orders from the US are under $1000.00 (postage included) or you will get hit with a customs import tax and gst.  Sometimes though this still works out cheaper than splitting in two shippments and paying postage twice, depends on how much over 1000 it is and the size/weight of the package.

I did some more research and the Diamond Black brake line 46779-09 will be perfect.  It is 42" long and has 35 degree banjo fittings on both ends so the bar line won't go straight down like the stock one and will look neater.    I can get this part from ebay and m&m cycles but it only works out about $15 cheaper (including postage)... so I will decide whether I can wait a week or just get it straight away for a few dollars more.

    Thanks man

hey brucecul, thanks for the offer but stainless will stand out a little too much as I have an Iron and want to keep to the blacked out theme.  I've gone with the genuine harley diamond blacked out braided line.

    thanks,

    dan,.
