Tri Bar LED Tail Light and the LAW

    Hey guys,

I have an 2009 FXSTB fitted with a Tri bar LED tail light and license plate bracket combined.

A WA cop stopped me today and said the tail light is not bright enough (it was 8:00 in the morning) and the number plate could not be used as inclusion for coverage of the rear tyre when talking about acceptable rear guard limits.

I said I had the original tail light and license plate bracket (combined) at home and he sugguested I put it back on before he yellow slips the bike.

I have spoken to the stealership about this and they say the tail light is street legal.

Does anyone know if this is right?

Was this cop just looking for something petty, as he ran a tape measure all over the bike and RBTed me as well and got nothing, but left me with the yellow slip warning.

    Enforcer,

Yes that is the same as my tail light. Your number plate is in the same spot as well.

I have read all I can on the net about bike mods in WA and I reckon there is nothing wrong with my setup.

What type of light meter did he use to determine that it wasn't bright enuf?
Fucken Serious??? Is this the kind of crap you guys in WA have to put up with? Man that sucks!
Surely you can fight that in court or something?

    Burto,

It was just a warning to put my stock tail light back on, but I think I'll keep my Tri bar LED on and run the risk.

Well if it is illegal, about 3/4 of the softails in qld will have to be put off the road cause most of em have the tri-bar.

My bike has the E stamped on the light. the red reflector is there.

What about the cops claim that you can not use the number plate as part of the fender (mudguard) and therefore the whole light and number plate assembly are ilegal, that was his next claim. As it did not cover the wheel from the 45 degrees to the centre of the wheel?

Sounds about right.... WA cops hate being dragged into the 21st Century. Probably still wants WA to secede....! Yep...they sure are thick.

The Australian ADR's are that all Lighting must be E Marked, The E is molded on the out side of the Lens, If you check the Lights on your Bike and Car you will see that they all have a small E on them.
A lot of Guys are Fitting Aftermarket Head Lights, Tail Lights and Indicators that Don't have a E mark and they are un road worthy. Most of the Lights I sell are E Marked Lights, There is a lot of Myths about Small Indicators being Un Road Worthy, Small Indicators are ok as long as they have the E

The CVO would have E Marked Tail Light as It's the International Model that is sold here and in Europe, But as a HD Spare Part,it would be US Spec only. The US do not use the E Mark, It's only used here in Austraila and Europe. To be Honnest the E stands for Europe

ADR should be the same from State to State shouldn't they? I couldnt imagine that a Hyundai or Harley would be imported them changed for each different state.
    Hence "AUSTRALIAN" Design Rules.

Man that makes me mad! What a fuckin' tosser! Obviously had not reached his quota for the day. I have one of those fitted myself and they are a shitload brighter than the standard fuckin' tail light assembly!  Unbelievable.....

Man, this shit really gets me down. All a bloke wants to do is tinker with his bike, still following the intent of the law even if not exactly to the letter, and some then jumped up dog decides it don't comply, and the shit hits the fan. Those pricks don't even have to be right to completely ruin your day and there's stuff all you can do about it.

There's no come back, no arguing, no nothing. Viva la revolution!!

G'day allde. Yeah mate, they are loud......128dB I think from memory.

Sometimes scares the shit outta me. First time I used them was on an EA Ford full of yobbos stopped at a green light. Gave her a toot and they musta thought a truck was behind 'em cos they started movin' in a hurry!

That's the reason why I got them, like you said, the standard horn is shite. It sounds like it was ripped of a postie bike. Very happy with the purchase. It's loud and its noticeable
