The process of upgrading my engine to 103 has started.....albeit with slight aprehension...not often ya get a chance to screw around with 30k worth of bike.
There are a few observations in the stripdown, first being the minimal wear of the cam tensioner shoes, hardly a mark on them after 57000km....I wonder if Amsoil had anything to do with it??....
The next is the carbon buildup on the pistons....my bike used absolutely no oil....I can only put that down to the breathers venting oil vapour into the intake...
My heads are with Galloways getting CCed and balanced, grit blasted and polished, valve job and 10thou shaved....
The down side is my new screaming eagle 103 barrels and pistons....I took then into Galloways for them to mic them as I suspect that the barrels are not true, first check without using torque plates is that they are not true, oval and inconsistant, (Havn't had word how they stack up with torque plate measurements) in fact they may not be usable as 103.....next may be to bore them correctly to 107...Bit of a piss off as they are supposed to be matched to pistons and accurate!!!
Andrews 54h cams are in and waiting for the fire above......
It's a great learning curve.....Gotta thank me mate "the proffesor" for stearing me in the right direction.....

Good onya Bobtail you are going to love the difference your bike goes good luck with the build .my brother and myself did mine 10000 kms on runs like a champ.
The pistons look like there was blow by from badly seated compression rings ? Did you run the bike in yourself ?
One reason I decided to rebore used cylinders for my rebuild, is from hearing stock Harley Cylinders are known for inconsistent / poor clearances.
After reading ya comment Speedzter, and looking at the pic closely it seems that the second compression ring is not sealing properly.....Ye I ran it in from new, with the advice from the dealer, quote:
ride it like ya stole it!!
Gonna run the build in differently....nice and easy, per the manual

I'm sure you've seen it, but if not, have a read of this: www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
Interesting read if nothing else. !
I hear ya loud and clear Oh wise one.....FFFYYYOOO....., I intend to talk to David at Galloways tomorow, and will do as you suggest.....If I don't, I'll never hear the end of it.....
BT - was that you that dropped all your gear off at Galloways on Monday. I was in there monday as well dropping all my shit off & the fella there was saying someone came in with the exact same stuff & same machine work. to be done
Thx for the info Oz.....I am not too interested in anything too radical, the work I'm having done is very basic....Once I get my head around things a bit more I will go the next step.....
I'll be glad to get the thing back together again and on the road......
Update on my pots.....I rung Galloways today and David tells me that the bores are pretty good, just needed a bit of honing....With torque plates they are out about 1 thou, which is well within limits....
And the old rings....Had a good look at them today and the second comp ring looks as if it has tilted hence the wear on the bottom 1/2 mm....both front and back display the same wear patern...
I don't think it would have helped compression.....Maybe someone out there can throw some light on this....
Hey Bt
have you banged it all back together for ride this weekend
Well I got the whole shebang back together last night and kicked it in the guts.....ran like it had a gut full of marbles.....I started to look for the nearest point in me shed to hang myself.....
It was possible that maybe the timing was out somewhere, even though I double and triple checked that during assembly.....Prior to start up and putting the plugs in I spun the motor over a number of times through the back wheel, making sure that nothing was binding or hitting anywhere....
I was pretty dejected at this stage and couldn't figure what may be causing it.....Was about to lock me shed and have a stiff drink, but had another last good look around...and noticed that the front O2 sensor wasn't plugged in....A minor oversight I thought.....Plugged it in and tucked the plug away on top of the rectifier.....
Hit the start button again and it fired up like a Harley should.....Fuck was I happy....now I know what it sounds like when a O2 sensor aint connected.....
All in all the whole experience has been great if not a bit nerve wracking....
Fired it up with 204 map......I'm putting Surlys map in from his 103 build and will tune to suit after the run in period....
Now remember BT
ride it like you stole it, for the run in period.
well done, its a good feeling when you do it yourself
