Electrical Problems

GDay Guru's.  I have a question regarding an issue I had with my bike on the weekend.  I went to Wambi on the weekend with some mates and got to Loxton refueled and the engine light came on along with the battery light.  Pulled over and thought shit!.  Checked for codes and it listed P0562. ( I didn't know what the hell that was as I didn't have references with me).  As we were only about 30k,s to go I thought I would risk it.  So I started the bike again and no lights.  The an they came on again when I got to about 40kKPH.  I caught up with the others and let them know I had issues.  Luckily a car was travelling with us and he had tools etc.  Bike wouldn't start ( Battery).  I checked for loose wiring under seat, etc. Also checked the Regulator earth as I had put on a oil cooler a few weeks earlier and that was tightish, so I tightened that up.  Got the bike started with leads and no lights

Got about 20k,s down the road and pulled up to wait for the car and the lights came on again.  I kept going and the engine light stayed on but the battery light went out, then the engine light faded.  I got to Wanbi and repositioned the earth strap for the regulator to a better position, after discussion with some of the others.  I had mounted it on the painted bracket that came with the oil cooler which was mounted to the block.

Cut a long story short,  I had to get a jump start the next morning, but had no issues with on the way home.Stpped for fuel at Murray Bridge and started staright way afterwards.

Would a bad earth cause the problems that I had or could it be something else just waiting. P0562 is Low Battery Voltage.  I haven't had a chance to check the charging system as yet, (multi meter crapped itself).  But will test it this weekend.

The earth strap for the regulator was in the same position fort about a month with no problems at all, and road the bike all the way to Loxton with no issues.  So I am wondering if not the regulator what else could it be?

Can you test the regulator, I know they are a throw away item if not working...

    Anyway thoughts would be appreciated

    AJ ,
I'm no electricial expert but it sounds from your description like a bad connection or a wire pinched somewhere.

Check your battery voltage with the engine off then running-- you should see a voltage increase while running. If the battery shows less than 12.2v on the initial test (do it cold after it's been sitting an hour or two), I would suspect the battery failing as well, but it doesn't account for lights going on and off.

Sorry I'm not much help with this, best I can do though-- I hate elec stuff.....
