Long shot ---- Broken Exhaust Bracket rear Header, Loose Heat Shield
hey lonerider, yeah I pretty much am in the same mind as you.... to me it doesn't really sound like anything is wrong, rather just a normal vibration or rattle that the engine would produce. It really doesn't bother me at all and I was never concerned about it.
nightrider.... now that you mention it, I think I only noticed this noise when I still had my stock pipes on! but when we went for that night ride you said you could hear it on my bike too, but i couldn't. I don't think I have heard it once since i put on the V&H pipes!
I have read the responses to this noise problem and it sounds just like what I am experiencing in my recently purchased '07 Sportster 883L. My bike was purchased only weeks ago with only 320 miles on it. I now have about 875 miles. The noise that I hear is a combustion related noise, The more pressure in the cylinders, the more intense the level of the noise. On level ground in 5th gear, cruising at 50 mph, the noise is barely perceptible. Roll on just a little throttle and the noise (rattle) increases. The more throttle added, the louder the noise.
I have taken the bike to 3 Harley gurus and all agree that this noise is a Harley way of life. All have said that some of the Sportsters are noisier than others. The fuel that I am using is 92 octane ethanol free. I have even tried some 100 octane aviation fuel and there was no change in the noise. It is my firm belief that this noise is not a detonation noise.
When I first got the bike, it had loud Python 3 pipes on it, slip-ons. The noise could be heard, but mostly it was masked by the loud pipes. Now, I have put the stock mufflers back on for some kindness to my ears---and those of my neighbors. The noise is more apparent. This bike has been equipped with a V & H fuel pak and was supposedly tuned with the Python pipes and the Screamin Eagle air intake.
All of the "gurus" said that the noise is a normal Harley 883 noise, and to just ride it and enjoy it. Apparently, not all of the 883s have this noise and my question is why?
I sounds like maybe it is pinging under load maybe try differant fuel . a bad flash point and pore flame propogation causes this under load if it dosent hesitate or miss it could be due to fuel or fuel air mix maybe a timing thing . ??????
There is a 'natural' - And I use that term loosely - noise that the evo engine makes...Only way to describe it is like a fast 'ticking' that gets faster and louder under load but quietens down when cruising. If this is the noise to which you are referring, You'll learn to like it...It's impossible to completely eliminate the noise, But a good set of pipes will drown it out, To the point of barely audible.
