    Hi Chris,
I preferred to use the clip type link on my Shovel (closed end of the clip always facing direction of travel.)
The standard length as far as memory goes with 24/51 sprockets was 102 links. The Clymer manual's
suggested way of checking, was to compress the chain to its shortest length on a flat surface and measure it,
then stretch it to its fullest length and measure it again. A difference of 1 inch or more and the chain should be replaced.
Depending on finances at the time I used to try and get "o" ring chains, they saved a bit on maintenance time.
    Cheers,
    Cris

Don't forget to have a look at your sprockets too Chris. If they are stuffed, (looking elongated and off centre)

they will stuff a new chain. If finances are tight and the sprockets are no good, take a link out and get a bit more out of the lot.

    Cheers.

If your chain is stretched to the point where there is no more adjustment possible, chances are its stuffed, removing a link or two will be a short term fix only, as the pitch of the chain will not match the pitch of your sprockets, meaning, instead of ALL sprocket teeth engaging with the chain as they wrap around the sprockets, only a few will, increasing the wear of both the chain AND the sprockets.

A short term "fix" will cost you more $'s in the long term.

Before replacing the chain with a new one, check the sprocket teeth for wear, especially the countershaft one that hides behind the primary case, if they are stuffed, so will your new chain be, sooner than you think !
