Gday all,
This is my first post on here. After about fifteen years wanting a Harley, i finally bought a 99 FXDL. My question is, im looking to upgrade the intake/ air cleaner assembly. The bike currently has a K&N filter in the stock air cleaner, and a set of screamin eagle slip ons (plenty loud enough). I want an aircleaner that will work well with the pipes i have and bring out the best performance possible. Ive read good things about the S&S super air cleaner, and the Doherty power PACC. While the Kuryaken hypercharger looks great, im concerned its only for looks. Looks arent as important as performance (hence i bought a dyna instead of a softail). My aim is to improve power/torque in the 2-4000 rpm range, as thats where i realistically do my riding. Any experiences with the above units would be appreciated.
Thanks
there is nothing wrong with the K&N filters.....they will give you all the air a 88 can handle.. maybe cams is what you should be looking @
S&S, Doherty and Kuryaken all use a K&N Filter. For Performance I would go with a Cycle Visions MoFlow or Prochager R, But you will need to change the Exhaust to gane any Power and Torque changes, Stock Header Pipes and Slip on's dont cut it.
Also a Carbie Re-Jet is needed.
I can give you a good deal on a Performance Package, Hooker Trouble Maker Pipes and a MoFlow $950.00
OK, ill try rephrasing my question.
What i meant to ask was about air cleaner assemblies, not the filters. I am well aware that a K&N filter is unrestrictive, but ive read its more important how the air cleaner BACKING PLATE shapes the air after it passes through the filter. What i was asking was which air cleaner assembly would work best on my bike. As i said, im not interested in cams, or any internal changes, at least not in the foreseeable future. All i want to do is make my stock engine work to its potential. If anyone on here has experience with either the doherty power PACC or s&s air cleaners (good or bad), i'd love to hear it.
From Heavy Duty a few months ago Hey Moflow (107) Tech Torque Hi Doc, I saw your article on the MoFlow air cleaner you fitted to Orange Betty. It sure looks a sweet unit, but I don’t know if many people have used them so far. Would I need to re-dyno my bike if I changed from the SE high-flow cleaner, and would it still be okay to use if I upgraded to a 103 big-bore kit later on? I use the SE Race Tuner on my 2008 FXST. – Chris Chris, there's no need to re-dyno when changing from the SE unit and the MoFlow works very well on a 103 cubic inch motor. I speak from experience of course, as Orange Betty had a 103-cube SE motor as stock. The MoFlow is indeed a sweet unit. However, I must admit to being slightly concerned about its flow capacity when I first laid eyes on one, as it looks small compared with some others. But after visiting Randy at Cycle Visions (www.cyclevisions.com) and seeing the flow charts, I was totally re-assured. They’re not just pretty but very functional too. Randy runs his own dyno and a lot of R&D was done before he released the MoFlow.
