Changing oils yesterday, mobil v-twin in all holes(3). Manual says 950mls in primary.Mobil v t bottle contains only 946mls written on the bottle.Measured dirty oil that was drained from primary = 1litre!!  Wait for it, measured new oil from the said bottle,(with a plastic measuring jug with measurements on it) got 950mls out of the bottle ok with 20mls left over. WTF.Big think about what to do next. The plastic measuring jug is way out? But the primary oil was was changed last by the "expert" dealer. So going the experts way by coming to the conclusion of FUCK IT,and poured the other 20 mls in.  Also,is there such a thing as usa litres/mls whatever? Sounds stupid but gotta ask.    I get my oil from Proserpine, $93.10 for a box of 6 bottles.

Mobil is some of the best stuff in the world, used in high performance German cars. I laugh when people say you should not use stuff other than Harley syn. Each to his own, but Mobil 1 and Amsoil synthetic oils are perfect for our air cooled V Twins. As I said each to his own. You can use whatever you like as long as you change it regularly (with filter)..

oil is the best thing to argue about, most mechanics will tell you that you should put the correct amount of the correct spec oil from a GOOD brand, regularly. save 100 bucks over 20,000 kms and rebuild an engine in half the proper life time? good oil, and a filter regularly, i am new to harleys but, i know mobil is good stuff, so is the harley stuff to though.

I'm a painter , all the big paint companies , claim to be the best , we never have problems with any of it and when we do you can bet your life its always the same problem with all the companies , (color ect. ) Anyway some builders, architecs , stipulate i buy a certain paint over another one , WHY,,, easy,,,,, KICKBACKS. iT AMAZING HOW THEY CAN TELL CUSTOMER A THAT THEY USE THE BEST PAINT , but change there mind, when they get another company on board cos they get a bigger kickback .

Point being , its the same with oil

Peter Stevens morphett vale , done a 1000 klm service on my triumph , they used motul , i had them change it at 10,000 they used Motul , its every 15000 service with triumph , at 16000 it went to peter stevens in adelaide for its major service prior to putting it in they told me they ONLY use Mobil in the triumphs . what did they use you guessed it, BELRAY go figure .

Personaly i think its like paint, the better brands are pretty much a much , you just have to make sure its at THE VERY LEAST semi synphetic.

But what the dealers tell you take with a pinch of salt , there loyalty to brands only goes has far has there pricing structure and PROFIT.

in theory ,any oil that meets the HD factory specs should do the trick. in practice oils aint oils, its easy to research oils on the net. it can get a bit confusing and many oil companies organise their own test with the results usually ending up in their favour. independant test are usually harder to find but are available if you look. my bike has about 400thousand ks on it [evo] i use Synforce HD specific oil,no noise issues and still runs like a gem, been using it for a couple of years now. i do oil and filter changes at 3500k,primary included and gearbox oil at 16000. never had a problem. touch wood.

not sure interstate, but most auto parts dealer in Qld can source it. if you get it wholesale {20 litre drum} it works out around 7 to 8 bucks a litre. try www.synforce.com.au all oils available ie gearbox, primary, brake fluid fork oil etc.  it is a high quality product ,made in Oz, usues a different method of mixing additives etc and is used by a lot of big transport fleets etc.

Not for air cooled V-twin. The oil for Air cooled bikes is designed for high constant temps and sharp rises in temp when the air flow stop at the lights than liquid cooled bikes. Also  bike oil has a lot more anti-corrosive and other stuff than car oil, because a high % bikes get put in the shed for the winter, it help stops the oil absorbing water and  the engine being damaged.

Does anyone know whether you have to flush the old oil out,,,,,,I knew a guy who used to swear by running deisel through the motor in between oil changes....

I had a quick google search on that very question.. this is one thing I came up with.. which makes a whole lot of sense to me...

    I found this on http://www.fixya.com/motorcycles/t6544391-ge_all_oil_out_motor

You don't unless you want to tear down the engine and clean it out. I read somewhere about a method of "flushing" an engine out but I've never done it and I've never lost an engine. I've been messing with Harleys since 1966 and I've never seen anyone do this.

Now, seems as if someone showed me an article that told how to "flush" an engine using kerosene. Personally, running a thin oil such as kerosene, and it is indeed an oil just like diesel fuel is, will do more damage to the engine than anything in the oil left in an engine will do other than metal. If you have metal in your oil, you need to disassemble the engine anyway. My suggestion is not to be so anal about your oil, just change the stuff at it's regularly scheduled intervals. If you want to get anal, change it every thousand miles. But, I don't suggest "flushing" your engine. The reason is that there are some places that you simply cannot get the oil out of the engine unless you disassemble it. Now, if you go start pouring kerosene in your engine, you can't get ALL of that out either. Then, when you add your new fresh oil, it's contaminated by the kerosene that was left in the engine.

    Good Luck
    Steve

... not my words, but another's opinion

... some of us are using 'reuseablle oil filters' easy to disassemble and check engine ware .. inbetween service intervals .. apart from never having to buy another oil filter.... there is quite a bit of debate on this in the forum... but interesting all the same.. I went with the K & P Engineering oil filter...

    Cheers
