HD heated grips

I commute 90k a day into Canberra on my sportster all year round. Last year I used the Kevin Rudd stimulus payment to buy myself some HD heated grips. For riding in the cold weather, these are bloody awesome. So with winter around the corner if you are contemplating getting heated gloves or grips, I can strongly recommend the grips. I bought them from Robbos and had the fitted there too. Top job and made sure that they would be compatible with the bars.

I have had 4 sets of these on my king. The worst of them lasted 3 days. yes, 3.

The bike is in the shop now getting the 5th set which have been redesigned to last a bit longer. Time will tell.

BTW the warranty on these is only 3 months, so use them as much as you can in the first 3 months, and if they fail get the bike in to the dealer ASAP for another set, otherwise you will find the pricks wont cover them.

    That is quite bizaar.
Mine are still going strong. I did get them professionaly fitted by Pete at Robbos HD Canberra.
Pete wired it so it has a waterproof inline fuse for added protection which I don't think came standard with the kit.

Hey sprocket, just wondering how youre heated grips have lasted. Its been a while since anyone has added to your topic. I use my bike all year round and its gotten cold now. I had them on my other bike (vtr 1000), and they worked fine for the three years i had it. I thought a follow up would be good.

I shove my hands in between the bottom of the tank and the top of the heads at traffic lights. Its toasty and makes me look tough at the same time.
I freeze in between the lights though.

    Hi Firestorm,
Mine still work but they are no way as hot as when they were new.

You could always get a set of Heat Demons from the states & fit them only a $140 approx plus postage, and you can use what ever grips you want.

Never was a big fan of heated grips but just rode back from Melbourne into the wettest June day in sydney in a million or so years.

Now thinking of ways to keep hands warm, a set of heated grips may be on agenda.

Rather than grips, I bought a pair of heated gloves about 2 years ago. Easy to install and when its not cold just leave the gloves at home. I did the Great Alpine Road a year ago and was warm as toast.

The hardest part is to remember to disconnect the wire threaded thru jacket arms to battery when getting off bike !

    Hi Super and Baloffski,

I bought the gloves from Alpine Motorcycles online. They are located in Myrtleford Vic. (the link to the site is in my previous post)
Other than being a happy customer I have no affiliation with the business.

A wiring harness connects directly to the battery terminals (with an in line fuse), with a waterproof plug (and a cap when not in use), that I installed just under my seat, securing the plug to the fender stay with a cable tie.

You also get another separate wiring harness that you easily rig up inside your jacket. Two separate wires in each sleeve end with a plug dangling from the arm of each jacket sleeve and then the wires join at the neck and then run down inside the jacket with the wire dangling an inch below the jacket.
It only takes me a minute to rig up this wiring harness in my jacket, or you could just leave it in place permanently. Easy to swap between your different jackets as well.

The gloves have a plug on each where you stick your hands, and are wired so that the heat disperses throughout the gloves.

So, when you get on your bike :-
    1. Connect plug at bottom of jacket to plug on fender stay.
    2. Connect glove plugs to plugs dangling from each sleeve opening on jacket.
    3. Put on gloves as normal.

All 3 plugs are quick-pull release types, so if you get off your bike and forget to unplug from the fender stay plug it just comes apart and off you go.

I’ve used the gloves on a recent ride from Sydney down to Goulbourn (always freezing there), to Cooma, Jindy and Thredbo. My hands were warm as toast all the way, whereas in the past I’d stop and my fingers would be white to the 2nd knuckle. I guess that at 56 years the old circulation isn’t as good as it used to be.

You can get an optional extra controller unit that allows you to control the power (ie heat) going to the gloves if you wish. I didn’t bother, if I get too hot I just unplug at the fender stay plug as I'm riding along. If I get cold I just pull over for a minute and wire myself back up.

If you email the business they will send you a glove sizing chart to make sure you get the right size. I did this and they fit like a glove !

I’ve ridden in rain and snow and the gloves are completely waterproof.

Best part is in the summer I just pack the whole lot away until next winter rather than having heated grips, wiring and controller boxes all over the handlebars.
