    Fatbob back Pain

    Hi

I have been riding Harleys since 94 having owned Softail, Sportster, Super glide and Road King and my current ride is a 2010 Fatbob, I have done 4000kms on the Bob and has been the most painfull 4000kms I have ever done this thing kills my back.

I did 30000kms on the Road King in 2 years and it was a breeze maybe I have been spoilt. I purchased a touring seat for the bob which is dam ugly but has made no difference. I like they way the bike handles looks and goes but the pain is just taking the fun out of it . I am 6ft and 105kgs has anyone got any thoughts on mods before I sell this bike, and I dont mean comments like the wife,

Suck it up, and put up with it.

    Thanks.

It is probably not the bike that is the problem but your ageing back, I presume that you are ageing. You can replace the parts on your bike or even the bike but you can only maintain your back. I would avoid operations like the plague, I have just had one go wrong  (not my back) & I spent a few weeks discussing which direction I would be going with the big fella in the white beard & white dressing gown.

So for my back I use stretching, exercise & an exercise regime called Pilates. My back still gives me a little pain but I can handle it, but I am thinking of a big ride (bigger that Perth & back) I would like to ride to the NOrth tip of Oz. For this I will be doing many monthe in the gym with some weight training cos I think it may be hard work for a 58yr olds worn out body.

ur right dermie exercise is the key .also better rear shocks ,adjustable ones like ohlins can give you great options from soft to harsh ,the best seat is the sundownwer that ive ridden on wide and comfy maybe a sheepskin or hawk air arse seat or the whole lot .

Enanspk, I am also 6ft and I found that leaning forward also gave me a bit of a pain in the back after awhile - so I changed my risers + my seat

check out the dyna section about 2nd page in under 'my fat bob is 2yrs old' and you'll see my bike with the mustang seat and 6 and half pull backs

on the bottom of the last page it is now a very comfortable ride

    ride safe

Could be the bars, to answer Dermie my last bike the Road King which I could ride all day and not get one ache, so I don't think it's my back even though I have been a concretor for 20 odd years the thing is I rode 200kms in Jan this year to pick up my new bike with the no pain and 100kms into my trip home I was stuffed I had to get off for 10 and walk around. I also tried the Air Hawk before I bought the touring seat and it didn't help. It's something to do with the geometry. What do I do with the bars, cannot go forward much?

mate they are a genuine harley davidson part no.56267-09

    6"pullback riser kit - 1.25"H

I got them from Bundaberg HD they cost around $290 make sure when you order them that are the ones that come with the caps

I 'd say you'll need to order the nylon/teflon bushes because a bit of extra length made mind a bit soft

I put the harder ones in and thats fixed the problem

    ride safe

I take it you are running forward controls ?

Mid mounts will help put your back into a better posture and will help.

All the idea's are great but the thing about forward controls guys is I have always had 2 to 3 inch forward than normal controls even had extended forward controls on my Road King, never having any problems so I'm going to try the pull back risers, which I have ordered today. If that don't work FOR SALE 2010 FATBOB the bike shop have offered me a straight swap on a 2007 Road King with
5000 kms on the clock. At least I know the Road King works for me.

    Thanks

2009 Fatbob here, My first Harley so cant  compare with any others but found my back playing up after half hour riding.Reckon its more to do with the drag bars and foward controls. I fitted 6 inch risers which move bars back an inch or so and got some mid mount pegs from the spares box at the dealers for nicks. Just flip them down when on the highway and feet and body are more alinged and back issue is not an issue so to speak. mid mounts are basically unnoticible when up with standard pegs and rubbers as they blend into the engine colour,

Sorry Guys after 4600 kms on the FatBob and change of seat and Bars I took the bike back and swapped it for a Street Glide.
Lesson here is once you have had a tourer never go Back.

    Thanks

yeah i did my back in on the superglide, and now the fatbob seems to be alot better, specially that nice back supporting seat and flatter bars. Happy days. Mid mounts would be an improvement again but I'm now getting away with decent rides without massive amounts of pain.
