Auto Tuning with SEPST Help

    I have reciently upgraded my 09 Ultra Classic with Heads,Barrells nd Cams. I picked a map that best matched my build but found the injector and Cam timings were way out.  I have since been given a MAP from a mate wiyh an Ultra simialarly built and had his bike dynoed. Working great but when the bike gets hot in traffic at idle i get surging and hesitation on start off.  I have tried to do a smart tune but cannot get the VCI to record.  I have followed the instructions set the recoring instructionsas per directions and cannot get the SEPST to record. I have a RED LED light showing on the SEPST which is connect to bike and secured in the Top Box. There is no pulsing of the light just a steady glow and no recorded data to download.  HELP?

     

    Can someone tell me how to get the SEPST to record and how to use this data in the SMART TUNE phase?

    You need to use the software to get it into recording mode. I assume you know how to do that. Then unplug the USB.

    Then you need to start the bike and press the red button. At that point it should start flashing. Do your recording then push the red button before you turn the bike off. if you turn the bike off first you will loose any data it recorded.

    Are you sure the problem isnt just the eitms??

    Dave,

    I hook up my laptop and leave it in  the topbox, go for a run and use that to record my data, the dongle is only good for 15 minutes worth which means repeated runs.

    Though I've reasonably happy so far, I intend to Dyno it to be certain, not many out here though so will have to wait till I get a chance to go to the big smoke.

    I'm pretty sure I picked the right map, but didn't get a lot of response from here when I posted before. If only I knew everyone went with TTS before I got the SEPST on

    I'm sure I'd have plenty of maps to pick from/play with.

    I have worked outthe recording secret but now having trouble   accesssing the smart tune feature. What I am doing wrong

    Dave, did you get the CD with Tuner, it explains it all pretty well on there, but if not try this, let me know if this makes any sense, I'm no propellor head but managed to work it out eventually.

    How to Use Smart tune

    Use the new Smart tune feature when you have made any changes to your motorcycle that affect the air flow through the engine or improve performance, such as:

    • new exhaust pipes
    • new air cleaner
    • different throttle body.

    Designed for use both with and without a dyno, the Smart tune feature takes the guesswork and trial and error process out of tuning, saving you time.

    The Smart tune procedure includes these basic steps:

    1.

    Load the base calibration.

    2.

    Record data. This information includes a section with Important Tips for Recording Data.

    3. Use the new Smart tune feature to modify the base calibration.
    4. Reflash your motorcycle's ECM with the modified calibration.

    Click on the links above to go to a specific part of the procedure, or simply follow the instructions below sequentially to use the Smart tune feature.

    Smart tune Procedure

    Loading the Base Calibration

    1.

    Select Tuning from the main menu.

    2.

    Select the base calibration you want to use.

    NOTE: For detailed instructions about how to select a calibration, see "How to Select a Calibration".
    NOTE:

    All Closed Loop calibrations will support Smart tune. Closed Loop calibrations are all calibrations with O2 sensor feedback.

    3.

    You must Reflash the ECM on your motorcycle with the selected calibration (with "Enable Smart tune Reflash" activated) before you start making recordings. Click the "Reflash" icon to go to the Reflash screen.

    NOTE: If necessary, see "How to Perform an ECM Reflash" for reminders and cautions before you perform the ECM Reflash procedure.

    4.

    In the lower right-hand corner of the screen under "Programming Status," there are two new radio buttons, "Enable Smart tune Reflash" and "Reset Adaptive Fuel". Click to select both buttons.

    • The "Enable Smart tune Reflash" button increases the Closed Loop data set of the selected calibration.
    • The "Reset Adaptive Fuel" button resets the adaptive fuel value to 100%. It is recommended that the Adaptive Fuel Value be reset any time a calibration is flashed back onto the ECM.

    NOTE: The "Reset Adaptive Fuel" option is not always available, depending on the calibration you have selected. The "Reset Adaptive Fuel" text will be grayed out and the button will be unavailable if the selected calibration does not support that feature.

    5.

    Click "Program ECM Cal". A reminder message reading "This calibration should be used only for the purposes of data collection." is displayed. Click "OK" to clear the message, then wait while the Reflash procedure completes.

    6.

    The "Flash Update Process Complete" message is displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions EXACTLY:

    • Turn OFF the motorcycle ignition switch.
    • Wait 10 seconds before starting the motorcycle.
    7. When you have completed all the on-screen instructions, click "OK" to clear the message.

    Record Data

    You have the option of recording data using the "Record Data" function through Toolbox>Data Items, or of recording data using the VCI in record mode.

    Important Tips for Recording Data

    When you are using the Smart tune function, it analyzes the recorded data that you collect (either with the Data Items>Record Data function, or the VCI Record function) to determine how the VE table values should be updated. The more data you collect to be analyzed, the greater the range of cells the Smart tune function will be able to recommend new values for. These tips will help you get the best data to use with the Smart tune function:

    • Ride the motorcycle at many different engine speeds and throttle positions.
    • Perform some constant speed runs at a stable throttle position in multiple gears.
    • Perform some increasing speed runs at a steady throttle position in multiple gears.

    NOTE: It is not necessary to record data higher than 80% throttle.

    Record Data using the Data Items>Record Data Function

    This option assumes you will be using a dynamometer during the test recording.

    1.

    Reconnect the VCI to the motorcycle and to the PC. Turn the motorcycle's ignition switch ON and the RUN/STOP switch to the RUN position to allow the VCI to re-establish communication with the PC.

    2.

    Click the Toolbox icon to display the Toolbox menu. Select the "Data Items" menu item.

    3.

    Position the motorcycle on the dynamometer and take all recommended safety precautions to secure the motorcycle for testing.
    4. Make sure the VCI and all associated cabling are secure.
    5. Click the "Record" button and perform the test. For more information about how to record data, refer to "How to Record and Playback Data".
    6. When the test is complete, click "Stop" and save the recording.
    NOTE: If you have a lot of recordings saved to your PC, make note of the recorded file names so you can quickly and easily identify them later.

    Record Data using the VCI in Record Mode

    1.

    Reconnect the VCI to the motorcycle and to the PC. Turn the motorcycle's ignition switch ON and the RUN/STOP switch to the RUN position to allow the VCI to re-establish communication with the PC.

    2.

    Click the Toolbox icon to display the Toolbox menu. Select the "VCI Data Record" menu item.

    3.

    At the VCI Data Record setup screen, click the "VCI Record Start" button to put the VCI in recording mode. Refer to "How to Setup to Record Data with the VCI" for more information.

    4. When prompted, disconnect the VCI from the computer.
    5. Secure the VCI to the motorcycle, and perform the VCI Record, either on a dynamometer or closed track.
    6. When the test is complete, leave the VCI connected to the motorcycle.
    7. Connect the VCI to the PC. Turn the motorcycle's ignition switch ON and the RUN/STOP switch to RUN.
    8. At the VCI Data Record screen (in the Toolbox menu), select the "Download data" tab.
    9. Download the recorded files. See "How to Download Recorded Data" for more information. This will transfer the files and take your VCI out of record mode.
    NOTE: If you have a lot of recordings saved to your PC, make note of the recorded file names so you can quickly and easily identify them later.

    Use the Smart tune Feature to Modify the Base Calibration

    1.

    If necessary, reload the base calibration you used to reflash the ECM for Smart tune at the Tuning screen.

    2.

    Click the "+" signs to expand the VE Front Cyl and VE Rear Cyl table displays.

    3.

    Click and drag the Working version of the VE Front Cyl table into the lower left working window. Select the "Display as table" option.

    4. Click and drag the Smart tune version of the VE Front Cyl table into the upper left working window.
    NOTE: If you chose, you can start with the VE Rear Cyl table, or display the Working and Smart tune files in whatever working windows you chose. The sequence described here is simply our interpretation of the easiest way to view the files and complete the Smart tune procedure.
    5.

    In the Smart tune, VE Front Cyl window, click "Add New..." to bring your recordings into the Smart tune window.

    6. Click to select the first Smart tune recording from the displayed list in the dialog box, then click "Open". The recording (and associated file path) will be displayed in the Recordings box.
    NOTE: If you have the wrong base calibration loaded, or if you have selected the wrong recording, you will get an error message reminding you that recordings must be done with the currently selected tuning file. The recordings must have been made with the same calibration that you want to modify saved to the motorcycle's ECM.
    7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 as necessary to load all of the recordings you want to use to modify your calibration.
    NOTE: If you accidentally load a recording you do not want to use, click on the recording in the Recordings box to select it, then click the "Remove" button.
    8. When you have selected all the recordings you want to use, click "Generate". A "please wait" indicator will be displayed while the software is calculating the results.
    9. When the generate function is complete, the indicator will disappear and the "Update" button will become available.
    10. Use the resizing handles to enlarge the Smart tune window so you can view the modified cells.
    NOTE: Only some of the cells will contain updated values, not all of them. To increase the number of cells that receive updated values, record more data at all different engine speeds and throttle positions. See Important Tips for Recording Data for more information.
    11. If necessary, resize the Working calibration window so you can view the values that will be changed if you proceed with the Smart tune procedure.
    12. If you are sure you want to make the changes to the VE Front Cyl table, click "Update".
    13. The newly calculated values will be copied to the Working calibration table, highlighted in turquoise. Review the changes to make sure the values are what you want them to be.
    14. Repeat steps 3 through 13 for the VE Rear Cyl table.
    NOTE: You will not lose the changes to the VE Front Cyl table by replacing the data in the working windows. The software will warn you if you are about to do something that would cause you to lose your changes.
    15. Save your modified calibration. Refer to "How to Save Changes to a Calibration" for more information and hints on how to save a modified calibration.

    Reflash your Motorcycle's ECM with the Modified Calibration

    1.

    Make sure the modified calibration is selected in the Tuning screen.

    2.

    Click "Reflash". When the Reflash screen is displayed, verify that the displayed information is for your modified calibration.

    3. Click to select "Reset Adaptive Fuel". Make sure "Enable Smart Tune Reflash" is NOT selected.
    NOTE: If necessary, see "How to Perform an ECM Reflash" for reminders and cautions before you perform the ECM Reflash procedure.
    4. Click "Program ECM Cal" and wait while the ECM reflash procedure completes.
    5. When the Flash Update Process Complete message is displayed, follow the on-screen prompts exactly, then click "OK" to clear the message.

    This completes the Smart tune procedure.
