G'day I own a 2004 XL1200R Sportster I only had the bike for a few months now it's got just over 25,000k on it I haven't been able to put to many ks on it myself because of work and the shitty wet weather we have had but since I owned it about three times this has happen after I turn off the ignition to shut down the motor it over runs for a few seconds.
Now as I said it is a 2004 carby model I say it should have electronic ignition and not points and the original Harley points cover is still fitted to the bike so I say that this has never been touched the motor only seems to over run when I been riding around town at the 50/60 kph speed limit and the motor is hot I am no mechanic far from it just taking a guess here could the bike be over fuelling from riding around town and when I shut down the motor it's just burning the extra fuel as I said it's only done this now and then any feedback would help.
First thing to do is buy a manual, check timing, plugs and intake for leaks, could be carbon build up in combustion chamber, when was the last service. Try and have a go yourself it will build convidence, ask for help when req.
Thanks last service was done at 24,000k I got all the paper work from when the bike was new and it's never missed a full service might have to go back and have a look if the plugs have ever been changed and I forgot to add the bike is fitted with aftermarket slip on mufflers so I don't know if the jetting was changed on the carby as well and to be truthful I don't know if that would affect it on not?
Yer Bucket you are having one of those days lol and shit did I turn off the ignition all the way yer I did. Ok having not owned a Harley in a while this bike is a 2004 model and it is the latest model I have ever owned and when I bought this bike and it was from a Harley dealership I asked what grade fuel I should run in it and the alarm bells should of rung when the salesperson said as far as he knew straight unleaded should be ok I should of checked up then to see if this was right. Now after posting this question here about the engine over run I did some surfing on the net to other forums only to find out that I should be running premium unleaded in my bike my fault I should have read the owners manual first and not just taken someone else's word on what fuel to run and the manual itself states that the 883 Sportster should run a 91 octane rating which is straight unleaded and 1200 Sportster should run a 95 octane which is premiun unleaded failue to do this can cause pinging or pre-ignition and now it makes sence to me because every now and then a run a tank full of premiun and no trouble and when I go back to just straight unleaded then I get this motor over run sometimes when it's hot so I just run premium fuel for a while and if that does not fix the problem next step will be the carby mixture.
