hey guys this might seem like a stuipd question but i'm trying to adjust  rear drum brakes on my 74 sporty.i took of the wheel to clean and check the condition of the rear shoes, ive put the wheel back on and adjusted  the chain and brakes but when i rotate the wheel the brakes seem to grab abit only in a certain spoton the drum, the rest of the wheel spins freely? and the chain seems to get tight at a certain spot then goes loose agian. I think mabey the drum is out of round, is this right? i havn't had this problem before on other makes of bikes. Am i missing some thing or doing something wrong?????   ANY FEED BACK WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

    Could be two separate issues.
When tightening the axle on a drum brake wheel, it is a good idea to have the brake fully applied first, to centralise both the shoes, and the drum, and then tension the wheel nut(with the brake still fully applied).
You may still have a little scuff scuff effect, but hopefully minimized.
The chain may have a tight spot, due to wear, and you may have set the adjustment in the looser part.
You could check the sprocket for run out, by holding a pointer at a spot on the swing-arm, and rotating the wheel, noting any gap variations. Not near as common as a worn out chain.
And yes, the drum could be well worn. Out of round would typically not refer to the sprocket mounting area though.

hi, also on early sporty check that the brake  backing plate is not rubbing against the sprocket rivets on the drum or the rivets are lose or coming out  i use to pop them out all the time  even with  extra screwed in allen head bolts ,  check wheel bearing set-up as per manual  if its short any bits in the bearings or shiming the brake  backing plate will rub against the sprocket rivets ,                 check drum & shoes  pull axle out if you can move backing plate up & down in the drum  too much the shoes are worn out  , or if the rear brake arm is leaning towards 1 o'clock  when adjusted  ? ,      you can get them re shoed &  ground to suit the drum  size  , adjust rear chain on the tight spot with you sitting on the bike  that way there is no tight spot
