This is probably a stupid question but i have a 95 Fatboy and am about to get some new fork oil.  In the service manual it says 340ml (wet) and 370ml (dry).  I am guessing that i am putting in 340ml as the dry amount is for completely new forks? Is this right?  Also another stupid question is it 340ml EACH side???

    Thanks fellas.

    Each Side it is.
Which fork oil are you using?
I recently change over to SE extra heavy duty.
Made a bid difference to the way bike absorbs road irregularities, pot holes, etc.

I do not have any Softail manuals as the measurement would be in them (I only work on Baggers).  If you have your forks apart make sure you fully inspect the bushings and always change the seal.  I work with forks and see many with worn out bushings where the Teflon coating is worn off @ which time your friction level increases.  They are cheap up here.  Make sure you clean all parts thoroughly than when you think you are done squirt some brake cleaner on and watch the grime come off.  Make sure you clean the inside of the fork tube by running a swatch down (I use a PVC pipe) it and use a copper line to get it back out the other way.  Just the same as a shotgun (if you have them).  The piston ring should be replaced every 50K miles.  I recommend changing oil & inspecting bearings every 10K miles.   I do not use HD Oil but a more expensive (like $1 or $2 more) fork oil such as Motul FORK OIL EXPERT LIGHT 5W or Bel Ray 5 W.  The weight is your choice and will not get into a discussion on that point.  Below is the oil out of a 10K mi Dyna bought new and the bushings.  Keep your own counsel.

    Thanks guys for the responses.
vladt what do you think about the screaming eagle oil? Thats what i am thinking of putting in. Does the bike feel better or worse?
Fast Harley - now you've got me thinking about pulling the forks apart and doing seals etc. The bike has done 31000klms and I dunno when or if the previous owner has changed the fork oil. Although he was pretty anal with it so i guess it would have been done. Anyway I was just going to change the oil at this stage and maybe wait till winter and then start pulling things apart.
