Wow, beat me to it on this thread. I know the side mount plate is 'illegal' here in NSW. I still reckon that the Iron and the Nightster look heaps better with the rear guard clean and no number plate or plastic crap hanging off it.

So, killing time until my Iron arrives, I went into the dealer to buy the side mount number plate bracket today. Turns out you can buy them easily (Frasers wollongong) for a mere $260.  Anyway, the guy behind the counter tells me they are illegal, I say yes, I know, but they look good. He then tells me that the fine for having one is about $300, two points and they defect your ride. This made me stop and think a bit.

Now, I know that if you get pulled over by a knob on a power craze then they will throw the book at you and there is nothing you can do about it. Even just having a set of pipes will get you in strife if you get the wrong person on a bad day.

So, advice from the more experienced, please. Who has a side mount number plate, and what is your actual experience (especially in NSW) of how they are regarded by the collectors of taxes, sorry, I mean Highway Patrol Police?

I don't ride like a psycho, and have never had any trouble on my Ducati - so will a side mount number plate draw out the enforcers like flies to a turd or not?
