1986 1100 Sporty Rebuild Help needed.

Need a good rebuilder that's known by word of mouth that is shit hot in what they do.  Phone book just doesn't do it.

The motor blew up from the rider doing a mono. Apparently there was a bit of metal inside the cases that went between the cams when the bike was near vertical. The "foreign" bit of metal wasn't from the bike but found it's way inside from when the motor was apart in a workshop somewhere. Fucknose how that happened.  So the damage is the cases are broken between the cylinder mount area.  Photo's will have to be got together of this breakage area to be understood, and if it's fixable.  Still fucked in trying to get pics up on this site.Yeah, bit of a simpleton, I know.

And I'm not into trusting bike shops, they're out there but are very few. That's why I'm after some good testimonies. My nearest bike shop towns are either Mackay or Townsville,so someone reputable in these areas would be a bonus for travelling sake. There and back by road the same day scenariou.

bit far away bucket, I'd be happy with a shop I can go backwards and forwards to in a few hrs. I'm off to Big Boar V-Twin Mackay, maybe tomorrow and get a quote for a motor rebuild, incl cases to be rewelded and machined or whatever.

Waiting on a call about a quote, hope it's not big $$'s.  What do youse think about a stock front end,(complete with wheel, brakes etc) with longer fork tubes/springs to match? Why wouldn't it work? Or would the stocka be too light for rough (Ha,eXtreme?) riding? Please explain.

Thanks Kiwi, I've given the motor to them split already. I oiled/greased the bits and wrapped them in gladwrap long time ago,so hopefully no rust. I put it on the shop to "sponsor" the bike, as in, their shop logo and stuff all over the bike. He said he will work something out. Whether that is positive for me I'll wait and see. They sent me to a friend of theirs, a Wrecker come bike shop, and they gave me approx figure of $500 for a complete front end includ wheel..photo

Philthy ifi can suggest you want a XT 600 yamaha or a Honda xl xr 600 front end complete for that price. IE brakes master cylinder and all.

From memory it would be easier to go with the honda front end the headstem bearings are smaller than the standard harley set up if you have a 1 inch set up the standard stem. the stem will be will be longer than you may need but a spacer , thick washer to get the bearings to snug up

The best front ends run a taper roller lower and a standard ball at the top so get you local bearing man on the case the id for jap bearings is metric standard but the od is not. Thats why they want you to shop with them in your case its the od thats imperial so they have imperial metric mix given where you are they mayneed to order them in but its no issue they are cheap

Keep us posted mate i love doing conversions for my mates ie making leading link forks and fitting forks that the manufacturers had no intentions of fitting.

Philthy mate watch out for real late model stuff they run pretty big steering stems, also the springs will be pretty light weight you will have trouble getting springs to fit after you stick em on a 300 kilo bike when it was designed for a 100 kilo.

If you can find em the best forks would be off a XLV750 honda but much easier to pick em up off a more common XL XR etc and easier to pick up heavier duty springs

You knowledgable peoples know anything about 1100cases?  Hopefully sussing out a 1989 1200 sporty for $4500. Just outta rego, goes good, clutch not flash. Can't complain about the price I suppose. Whadda ya reckon readers?Too dear? Missus starting to spit it to. Whatever. I'll get there yet.     I wonder if my 86  1100 parts will fit an 89 1200?

Hi there philthy sorry to hear of the mess mate by the way what was the major damage any gorry photos for us.

I dont agree mate that parts cannot be fixed i am just getting my mate to weld up some 1927 AJS 350 cases for me, yep mates rates he does stuff for me and i make a lot of his special tools etc mate these where busted cracked and wrecked 60 years ago but can be fixed.

i just looked up Harley Davidson Sportster Performance and there appears no change to the motor between the years you specify.

I oftern use a web site in the states to compare parts from a number of different models

    Linky here mate

    Thanks Bruce,
They've got cases for $1,138 US. Bearings and associated bits on top of that. Conversion =$1,512AUS?.Mmmmmmmmm. I'm happy as, being able to get the cases, thanks Bruce. Dunno why the guys at the bike shop didn't know about Bandit. They drag race an 1100 sporty to. No worries. Now I've got the choice of that or a whole bike for $4500. Ha! I'll get there. And the Bandit cases are OEM!!!!! How cool it would be to get my missus's Sporty going. She rode it from Sydney to Tas in'87. We shifted to Qld,she sold the bike when she was pregnant with our 1st, bought it back 10 years later as a blown/fucked basket case years ago. Sat there doin nuthin til now. So I spose every cent spent on it would be worth it. She don't see it that way though.

Where in the usa is bandit? I've had a good squizz at their site but doesn't give a locality address. I've got friends going over soon and could get em to pick up some cases if their near the shop. Might save a bit on freight?

I think I jumped the gun bruce. Re-looking at the parts list $'s etc, the cases are not avail. Can't tick a $ box to put stuff in my shopping cart,on their page,if you get my drift. I'll have to go to mackay and take pics or take my "blown" motor back home and start another plan of attack. Fucking bloody fuck. I was all geared up to. Either way,I'll post up some pics. I'm not out yet!!!
