I have a 2009 Fatboy which has the original Dunlop on the rear which has reached teh tread wear bars after 10,000klms. When I bought the bike the dealer told me I could expect to get between 6,000 to 8,000klms out of the rear tyre so I am pleased to have gotten 10.000. I am now wondering if I should stick with the Dunlop or is there a better tyre that will give me the best combination of performance & miles.
Gazza- I used dunlops 20 years ago and found them slippery in the wet when cornering and went over to Metzelers, having done over 200k's on Metzler Marathons ME 88's & 880's, I found the metz gave better corning grip especially in the wet, but they scollop in the way they wear out in the chicken strips on my softails. I ride 3 up 50% of the miles and with my dog (2 up) 95%. I ride country roads 70% city 20% dirt 10% .
I'd get around 9.5k out of them legal and 12/13K running thin, (so was my wallet). I'm now trying Dunlop again the 402 - MU85B16 and @ $230 dollars fitted (wheel off) from Bob jane city store in melb i carn't complain about price comparison. So far (3k) very pleased with the grip wet and dry and the wear? I'm expecting to beat my metzelers for distance as the statrting middle tread depth is an astonshing 11/32 as opposed top 9/32 for most tyres. (8.73 - 7.14mm if your a young spud) and the carry weight rating is up about 100lbs (45 kil -a-grammas)on the metz. I do have mates who 'really' get in the 20k's out of their rear tyres and they ride 'similar' to me and they shit me!!!! They are doing it on Metz and other brands contentials i think.
Dont worry too much about the price and miles as as every mile is better than sitting on a wheelie chair and spinning around or wathcing x-tube with that dam cat in the roof.
