Guys,
Got some sort of noise coming from the mid to rear section of my two week old Sporty Nightster. Seems to only do it when the bike has been riden for 15 minutes or more.
I first thought it was rear disc brake noise, but after taking it for a lengthy ride without using the rear brake it still does it. Rear brake piston does not seem to stick. When rolling to a stop from 60ks with clutch in and no brake it still does it.
Dealer had it today and reckons it is the drive belt wearing in and should be gone by its 1st service at 1600ks. The noise gets very loud , can hear it over the stock pipes.
Anyone had this or got any suggestions??
Cheers Nomad
Hi Hogbag
Yeah thinking that myself, its that kind of noise.
Have a set of V&H short shots, fuelpak and S&S stage one air cleaner to put on her. Was going to wait till after the first service, but think ill do it now. Like you said, drown out the noise, and dont bring it home from the first service untill the noise is gone. The dealers had the bike for three days and is assuring me its the belt settling in.
Love the bike, but its turning heads for all the wrong reasons.
Ive had a couple new bikes, never heard of a belt settling in. Id be more looking at the shape of the rear rotor if it is warped or something. Friend of mine brand new 08 softail when he got it had a warped back disc had 8 kilometres on the guage. Got me fucked how it happened but it was warped and they replaced it. Weirder things have happened i guess. is the noise there if you spin the wheel with the bike turned off ? Might be easier to hear exactly where its coming from that way
My rear end tends ta squeak a bit if me belts too tight as well !
Gday Nomad, i just replaced pullys @belt on my ultra, a noise back there drove me mad, must of stopped 3-4 times to check things out on a trip to Brissy, i had to get over it. 600 odd klms later noise disappeared . think it was the new belt settling in.. cheers Pricey.
Sportsters can have a few different noises, one is the cam gears they have a gear on each cam lobe ( 4 cams ), rear belts on anything if they are adjusted too tight, sound like a canary, reason why they would say it will go away when it wears in is, they probably adjust them tight from new, to alow some belt stretch. just check your belt adjustment while you sit on the bike. also check your rear wheel is lined up true.
push the bike with motor off forward and backward see if you hear same noise.
good luck ,cheers
